Imagine a contraption that sets a chain reaction in motion at the push of a button, frying eggs, juicing oranges, brewing coffee, making toast, and serving it all on a plate with jam, meat and cheese. What a perfect way to start the day! This fantasy became reality during Platform21 = Jamming, when Japanese designers Yuri Suzuki and Masa Kimura built a machine just like this at Platform21 with help from fellow designers and the public.

Platform21 = Jamming was Platform21’s final project, and so we threw everything into the mix. Yuri Suzuki and Masa Kimura reused the remnants of previous Platform21 projects in their breakfast machine, from remote-controlled toy cars to hacked IKEA lamps. They got help from other designers who’ve taken part in past Platform21 projects, and many vistors lended a helping hand too! So whether you’re a Gyro Gearloose or all thumbs didn't matter. The building consisted of a hefty dose of improvisation and a great deal of testing. Every day the machine took on a new function and the breakfast gained a new component. Een machine die na een druk op de knop een kettingreactie in gang zet en eitjes bakt, sinaasappels perst, koffie zet, boterhammen toast, en samen met jam, kaas en vleeswaren op een bord serveert. Geen verkeerd begin van de dag! Bij Platform21 werd deze fantasie werkelijkheid. Japanse ontwerper <a href="http://www.yurisuzuki.com">Yuri Suzuki</a> en kunstenaar Masa Kimura bouwden in acht dagen een machine die een traditioneel Nederlands ontbijt bereidt. En ze nodigden jou uit om te helpen!

Suzuki en Kimura gooiden voor dit allerlaatste Platform21-project alles in de mix: Platform21 = Jamming. Zo hergebruikten ze restmaterialen van vorige Platform21-projecten; van op afstand bestuurbare speelgoedauto’s tot gehackte IKEA-lampen. Ook werden ze geholpen door ontwerpers die deelnamen aan een eerder project. En ook bezoekers hielpen een handje, en schetsten, testten en bouwden mee. Of je nou een Willie Wortel bent of in het bezit van twee linkerhanden, dat maakte eigenlijk niet uit. Het bouwen bestond uit een flinke dosis improvisatie en heel veel testen. Zo ontstond iedere dag een nieuwe functie van de machine en een nieuw deel van het ontbijt, en veranderde Platform21 uiteindelijk in een restaurant dat ‘all-day breakfast’ serveerde! After having developed several remarkable repair techniques with different designers during the course of 5 months of Platform21 = Repairing in Amsterdam, we embarked on a repair adventure in New York to save and upgrade an old officer's home on Governor's Island. Together with the public and supported by some incredible volunteers, we repaired crumbling ceilings using Tape Boogie Woogie, inspired by Mondriaan's famous painting. Daan van den Berg brought new life to the chipped walls using a new transfer technique. Lotte Dekker restored and upgraded broken china with Bison Kintsugi and Heleen Klopper fixed holes in carpets, curtains and textiles using her Wool Filler. Na gedurende een periode van vijf maanden in de zomer van 2009 met verschillende ontwerpers en makers allerlei mooie nieuwe reparatietechnieken te hebben ontwikkeld, waagden we ons aan de oversteek naar New York om een oude officierswoning te herstellen. In samenwerking met een ontzettend enthousiast publiek en ondersteunt door een groep onmisbare vrijwilligers, gingen we vervallen plafonds te lijf met Tape Boogie Woogie, geïnspireerd op Mondriaan's beroemde schilderij. De muren werden onder leiding van Daan Van den Berg onder handen genomen met een nieuwe transfer techniek gebaseerd op de ooit zo populaire krasletters. Lotte Dekker herstelde gebroken serviesgoed met Bison Kintsugi en Heleen Klopper repareerde gaten in tapijten, gordijnen en kleding met viltnaald en Wolplamuur. Platform21 = Repairing started with the idea that repair is underestimated as a creative, cultural and economic force. If we don’t consider repair a contemporary activity we will loose an incredibly rich body of knowledge – one that contributes to human independence and pleasure. The situation is especially puzzling when you consider current global interest in other ideas related to sustainability, such as recycling and the cradle-to-cradle philosophy. With Platform21 = Repairing we aimed to raise awareness of a mentality, a culture and a practice that not so long ago was completely integrated into life and the way we designed it.

In the hope of spurring a reappraisal of repair, Platform21 wrote and published a manifesto describing the benefits of fixing things and calling upon designers and consumers to break the chain of throwaway thinking. Throwaway thinking, a culture in itself almost, is designed to cater to short term needs of both industry, politics and society. But by being very successful at short term effects it has lost track of the innumerable and rich possibilities that lie ahead if durable notions of design in general, and repair especially, are reconsidered and implemented. In the slipstream of the Repair Manifesto Platform21 organized workshops, an exhibition, lectures and repair evaluation clinics both with professional designers, students, amateurs, as well as the general public. It is in the richness of the pallet we wanted to present, from the mildly absurd positions of some of the participants involved, to the completely functional, logical and directly implementable techniques of others. Maybe the most important quality of repair is to give your products a longer life, but this is not the only quality. Repairing adds your personality to products, teaches us how things are made and how to take care of things. It gives a sense of accomplishment and control, and not least important, it is fun. So, STOP RECYCLING. Platform21=Repairing, een project over reparatie, ontstond vanuit de overtuiging dat reparatie meer aandacht verdient als creatieve, culturele en economische kracht. Er dreigt namelijk een hoop kennis verloren te gaan wanneer we reparatie niet weer als hedendaagse activiteit op de kaart zetten - kennis die bijdraagt aan persoonlijke onafhankelijkheid en plezier. Dat is vooral vreemd wanneer je bedenkt hoeveel interesse er op dit moment is voor andere vormen van duurzaamheid, zoals recycling en het cradle-to-cradle concept. Met Platform21 = Repairing wilden we meer bewustheid creëren voor een mentaliteit, cultuur en praktijk die niet zo lang geleden nog een vanzelfsprekend onderdeel was van ons leven en de manier waarop we die vormgaven. Ook gaven we een duidelijk signaal af: het is nog niet te laat is om deze cultuur weer in ere te herstellen!

In de hoop een herwaardering van reparatie te realiseren, vooral in Westerse landen, schreef en publiceerde Platform21 een manifest waarin puntsgewijs de kwaliteiten van repareren als gedachte en als activiteit worden beschreven. Ook riep het manifest ontwerpers en consumenten op de vicieuze cirkel van onze weggooimentaliteit te doorbreken. Die manier van denken, bijna een cultuur op zichzelf, is ontworpen om te voorzien in korte termijn wensen van de industrie, politiek en de samenleving. Maar door succes op de korte termijn zijn we de talloze rijke mogelijkheden uit het oog verloren die gepaard gaan met de toepassing van duurzame noties over design in het algemeen, en reparatie in het bijzonder. Who wanted to know what else a LAMPAN could be besides a lamp or how the PRODUKT milk-frother could also be used for other purposes, looked at Hacking IKEA for inspiration.

Hacking existing design is a recent phenomenon. Around the world, for a variety of personal motives, professional and nonprofessional designers are making individual alterations to off-the-shelf products. In the process, they pay little or no attention to a product’s original function. Some do it for fun, others out of necessity, and still others out of a critical attitude toward mass production. IKEA hacks – the appropriation, adaptation and transformation of standard IKEA products – are among the most noticeable expressions of this movement. IKEA is a very successful and consumer friendly multinational, with a large fan base all across the Western and Asian world. But it is also a cultural entity, an economic force and an icon of global change. Therefore it is not surprising that numerous artists and designers as well as the general public, have a special relationship with IKEA. Wie wilde weten wat een LAMPAN behalve lamp nog meer kan zijn of hoe je de PRODUKT melkopschuimer ook voor andere doeleinden kunt gebruiken, vond inspiratie in Hacking IKEA.

Het hacken van bestaand design is een recent fenomeen. Wereldwijd en vanuit uiteenlopende persoonlijke motieven maken professionele en niet-professionele ontwerpers individuele aanpassingen aan kant-en-klare producten. Hierin wordt niet of nauwelijks rekening gehouden met de oorspronkelijke functie. Sommigen doen het voor hun plezier, anderen uit noodzaak en weer anderen uit een kritische houding ten aanzien van massaproductie. Onder de meest in het oog springende uitingen van deze beweging zijn de IKEA hacks: de toe-eigening, bewerking en transformatie van standaard IKEA producten. IKEA is een erg succesvolle en klantvriendelijke multinational met een grote schare fans in de hele Westerse en Aziatische wereld. Maar vooral is het ook een culturele entiteit; met zijn enorme economische kracht is het een icoon van de globaliserende wereld. Daarom is het geen verrassing dat verschillende kunstenaars en ontwerpers, zo ook het grote publiek, een speciale band hebben met IKEA. No Reference of fashion designer Christophe Coppens was an installation in Platform21 that functioned as a temporary studio. Here, Coppens continued to work on his new collection consisting of 33 couture accessories, which were not yet finished. The making process could be followed for two months, during which Coppens worked during public opening hours for several days.

Last year, the Belgian Coppens was the first winner of the H+F Fashion Award presented to him by Han Nefkens. The award, a €20,000 cash prize, was given in order to realise a special project. Coppens took the award as an opportunity to buy his freedom: to let go of all his usual sources of inspiration, to ignore what he and his colleague designers have created before and to forget what he is usually good at. He questioned his own work and went back to square one. Abandoning all baggage: No Reference. The Couture Process Made Visible Coppens already worked on his new accessories collection in his Brussels studio before taking it to Amsterdam. He finished it at Platform21, inside an installation that blended museum-style presentation and workshop, with accessories displayed as work in progress. Visitors witnessed the last part of a process full of blood, sweat and tears. Those who are handy with needle and thread were even invited by Coppens to help on the days when he was present. The creative process, normally kept strictly hidden from the outside world until the accessories are presented in Paris, was hereby made public. 'No Reference' van modeontwerper Christophe Coppens was een installatie in Platform21 die functioneerde als tijdelijke studio. Hier werkte Coppens door aan zijn nieuwe collectie bestaande uit 33 couture accessoires, die nog niet af waren. Gedurende twee maanden was het maakproces te volgen, waarbij Coppens sommige dagen aan het werk was tijdens openingstijden voor publiek.

Vorig jaar ontving de Belgische Coppens de H+F Fashion Award van Han Nefkens, als eerste modeontwerper. De award, een geldprijs van €20.000,- , was bedoeld voor het realiseren van een speciaal project. Coppens zag het project als een oefening. Hij daagde zichzelf uit de vele referenties die hem normaliter inspireren, los te laten, terwijl de couturetechnieken behouden bleven. Hij stelde zijn werk in vraag en ging terug naar af. Zonder bagage, zonder referenties. Het coutureproces zichtbaar gemaakt In zijn atelier in Brussel werkte Coppens al aan zijn nieuwe collectie. Hij maakte deze af in Platform21, binnen een installatie waarin museale presentatie en werkplek in elkaar overliepen, en waar accessoires als work in progress werden gepresenteerd. Bezoekers waren getuige van het laatste gedeelte van het proces van bloed, zweet en tranen. En degenen die handig zijn met naald en draad werden door Coppens uitgenodigd om mee te helpen op de dagen dat hij aanwezig was. Het proces, normaliter strikt geheim gehouden voor de buitenwereld tot aan de presentatie in Parijs, werd zo openbaar gemaakt. Envision the world as a computer game in which your clothes are 3D projections and the GPS system tells you the position of an object. Imagine yourself as an avatar, flying through future cities and simulated landscapes. Now picture this virtual world in the real world. What will it look like then? Platform21 = Checking Reality invited to explore this world in the real world. With the art works in the Beatrixpark, films on the CASZuidas video screen, the latest experiments at Platform21, workshops, presentations and performances during Club Real evenings the programme offered a big variety.

Our use of digital media heavily influences the way we experience, test and create reality. Virtual alternatives are often so convincing that they not only augment reality but seem to replace it. It’s as if ‘virtual seeing is believing’. Artists, architects and designers are increasingly taking inspiration from the many new virtual possibilities. Some of them were asked to create new work for the Beatrixpark, adjacent to Platform21, others presented themselves during the club evenings. Platform21 = Checking Reality was an exploration into the possibilities and results of the encounter between first and second reality. A laboratory where the reality of virtuality was tested. In cooperation with Artvark (Tom Jaspers), Harry Kraaij from the <a href="http://www.virtueel-museum.nl">Virtual Museum Zuidas</a> and Zuideramstel district council. Stel je de wereld voor als een computerspel waarin je kleren 3D-projecties zijn en het GPS systeem je de positie van een object vertelt. Beeld jezelf in als avatar, vliegend door toekomstige steden en gesimuleerde landschappen. Plaats deze virtuele wereld in de echte wereld. Hoe zal het er dan uitzien? Platform21 = Checking Reality nodigde je uit om deze virtuele wereld in de echte wereld te verkennen. Met kunstwerken in het Beatrixpark, films op het video screen CASZuidas, de nieuwste experimenten in Platform21, workshops, presentaties en performances tijdens Club Real avonden was het programma uitgebreid.

Ons gebruik van digitale media heeft veel invloed op de manier waarop wij werkelijkheid ervaren, toetsen en tot stand brengen. Vaak zijn virtuele alternatieven zo overtuigend, dat zij de werkelijkheid niet alleen ondersteunen maar deze lijken te vervangen. Toch is het juist in ‘first-life’ - de gewone realiteit - waar zich de meest interessante veranderingen aftekenen: nieuwe steden lijken steeds meer op de animaties die de architect ooit heeft gepresenteerd, online communities leiden tot ander sociaal gedrag, en mode kopieert stijlkenmerken van kleding in computerspelletjes. Er is sprake van een soort eerst virtueel zien, dan geloven! Picture the kitchen as a laboratory for building, gluing, stamping and designing. Ever heard of potato plastic? Tomato deodorant? Or using a carrot as a flute? Platform21 = Cooking and Constructing invited public to discover new uses for edible ingredients together with various designers, artists and architects.

This temporary do-it-yourself cooking studio designed by Frank Visser (IJM) was open to create with the help of instructables – step-by-step directions in words and pictures. With every Sunday a Sunday Soup, with workshops, lectures, presentations and films. Here you can see what we created together with the audience, with the designers who used the exhibition space as their studio and the instructables to use and go do it yourself! Platform21 = Cooking and Constructing was part of the GNAM - gastronomia nell' arte moderna - festival. GNAM is an international festival uniting gastronomy, art and creativity. It also took place in Parma, Italy earlier this year and will still go to Cahors, France later this year. Now that most vehicles have robust reliability, quality and performance, it is up to designers to dare to dream again and design the car of the future.

Platform21=Joyriding offered a visual road trip into the imagination. Not a car show but an aesthetic joyride, it was all about form and feeling rather than engineering. Our sampling of amazing imaginary cars, some dreamt up by graduates of London’s Royal College of Art, reminded that automotive design can still take our breath away and keep us curious about the future. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4040"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/737/4040-300-225.jpg" height="225" width="300" alt="" /></a> The exhibition brought together animated visions of concept cars, scale models of vehicles that made you think differently about cars, and designer-pimped remote-controlled rides. Our fantasy fleet transported visitors back to a childlike joy in form and movement and a need for speed. The projected animation showed a highway as it might look in a few years time. It provided a glimpse into a future of softer, rounder shapes. Cars as personal ‘bubbles’ in which you can find peace of mind and which move slowly. If it is not meditation, but adrenaline you are looking for, you would have been astonished by the futuristic forms of the designs of Filip Krnja, shown in a Manga anime. <object width="300" height="243"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/H8jZtwRJnRs&fs=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/H8jZtwRJnRs&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" wmode="transparent" width="300" height="243"></embed></object> In 1958 Disney forecasted what the highways of the future would look like. We thought this film was so fascinating that we showed 'the Magic Highway' in the exhibition. Next to the projection, there were also several models on show; most of them on scale, but others in real size. Like the cardboard version of artist Hugo Vrijdag’s eMotio. You drive this tricycle by shifting your weight from one side of the vehicle to the other. A miniature of Jose Ramon Lopez Gonzalo showed his concept The New Gypsies, a car-and-house combo featuring a detachable vehicle. The Bugiman of Ehsan Moghaddampour is made just to race around an empty dessert; its raison d’etre is fun. When we asked designers to convert toy cars into their ultimate joyrides, it was green lights all the way. Nu de meeste auto’s beschikken over robuuste betrouwbaarheid, kwaliteit en prestatie is het aan ontwerpers om weer te durven dromen en de auto van de toekomst vorm te geven.

Platform21 = Joyriding maakte een visuele ‘road trip’ door je verbeelding. Geen autoshow maar een esthetische joyride waar het om vorm en gevoel draait in plaats van om techniek. Onze selectie van denkbeeldige auto’s, waarvan sommige bedacht zijn door eindexamen studenten van de Royal College of Art in Londen, bewees dat autodesign je nog steeds nieuwsgierig maakt naar de toekomst. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4040"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/737/4040-300-225.jpg" height="225" width="300" alt="" /></a> De expositie combineerde geanimeerde beelden van concept cars en schaalmodellen van voertuigen die een heel ander licht werpen op het fenomeen auto, met op afstand bestuurbare auto’s die op verzoek van Platform21 gepimped zijn door verschillende ontwerpers. Een alternatief wagenpark waar de kinderlijke opgetogenheid voor vorm en beweging en een need for speed de boventoon voeren. De rond geprojecteerde animatie gaf een blik op een snelweg zoals die er later misschien uitziet. Zo werd een voorproefje gegeven op een toekomst van zachte, rondere vormen. Auto’s als persoonlijke ‘bubbels’ waarin je tot rust komt en die langzaam voortbewegen. We vonden het filmpje zo mooi dat we 'the Magic Highway' in de tentoonstelling lieten zien. Daarnaast waren er verschillende modellen te zien; op schaal, maar ook op ware grootte. Zoals de kartonnen versie van de eMotio, gemaakt door kunstenaar Hugo Vrijdag. Deze driewieler bestuur je door je lichaamsgewicht van de ene naar de andere kant van de wagen te verplaatsen. Een miniatuur van Jose Ramon Lopez Gonzalo toonde zijn concept ‘The New Gypsies’, een auto-en-huis combinatie met afneembaar voertuigje. What does paradise look like? In your own miniature world, it’s up to you. Platform21 asked train hobbyists, designers, artists, architects and students to collaboratively build a fantasy miniature landscape in its round exhibition hall.
