De gedachte aan mensen die in de oorlog hun meubels opbrandden om warm te blijven en te kunnen koken diende als inspiratie voor FLAMMA. FLAMMAgaat terug naar een basisbehoefte van de mens: vuur maken. Het leek Helmut Smits mooi om als een soort oermens de IKEA in te gaan en vuur te maken met producten die daar te vinden zijn. Dit sluit ook aan bij het imago van IKEA en de Zweedse levensstijl: Back to Basic. IKEA verkoopt overigens geen aanstekers, fornuis- aanstekers of lucifers. IKEA ingrediënten:

FLAMMA Designer: Helmut Smits

The thought of people burning their furniture during the war so they could keep warm and cook formed the in- spiration for FLAMMA. FLAMMAharks back to one of humanity’s basic needs: making fire. Helmut Smits thought it would be interesting to go into IKEA as if he were a primitive human being and make fire using products found there. This fits the back-to-basics image of IKEA and the Swedish lifestyle. IKEA does not, however, sell lighters or matches. IKEA ingredients:

“Vanuit een onbekende plek breek ik in op de server- computer van IKEA. Hier in het zenuwcentrum zijn alle CAD-Files van de IKEA producten opgeslagen en worden vanaf deze server over de gehele wereld gedownload. Door mijn net ontwikkelde Elephantiasis-virus met de CAD- Files te verbinden, kan ik het hele assortiment hacken. De besmetting van het virus veroorzaakt willekeurige vergroeiingen zoals bollingen, barsten en bultjes, alleen te zien als de klant het product thuis met zijn 3D-printer print.” De MERRICK is ontstaan tijdens het fantaseren over de hierboven beschreven ontwikkeling. De MERRICK is een mix van een digitaal bestand, besmet met het menselijke 'Elephantiasis-virus' en daarna door een 3D-printer omgezet in een tastbaar product. Elke lamp die wordt geprint zal op deze manier anders zijn. Het thuis 3D printen, klinkt waarschijnlijk nog als toekomstmuziek. Als we de medewerkers van TNO mogen geloven, die zich hier dagelijks mee bezighouden, is dit zeker niet ondenkbaar. De 3D-printer voor consumenten staat nog in de kinderschoenen, maar zal naar verwachting een nieuwe revolutie ingang zetten. IKEA ingredienten:

“From an unknown location, I break into IKEA’s computer server. In this nerve centre, the CAD files for every IKEA product are stored and are downloaded worldwide. By infecting the CAD files with the ‘Elephantiasis virus’ I have just designed, I can hack the entire range of products. The virus causes random deformities, like lumps, cracks and humps, which only show up when the customer prints his product at home with his 3D printer.” The MERRICK originated during a fantasy about the development described above. The MERRICK is a digital file infected with the human 'Elephantiasis virus’ and then converted into tangible products using a 3D printer. Every lamp that is printed will therefore be different. Three-dimensional printing at home might sound like science fiction. But according to the employees at the TNO research institute, who study it on a daily basis, it is far from unthinkable. Consumer 3D printing is still in its infancy, but it is expected to touch off a new revolution. IKEA ingredients:

In IKEA schijnt geen natuurlijk daglicht. Toch worden er planten verkocht, aan het einde van de routing, waar het een rol vervult van decoratie die je snel nog even meepikt. Frank Bruggeman irriteert zich hier aan en maakte daarom IKEA GARDENING: een aanklacht tegen de plant als interieuraccessoire, maar tegelijkertijd ook een positieve invloed. Hier wordt men zich bewust van het telen: de planten krijgen de ruimte en decoratieve vruchten werden geplant als zaden. IKEA ingrediënten:

IKEA GARDENING Designer: Frank Bruggeman

There is no natural daylight in IKEA, though it does sell plants. They are at the end of the route, where they fulfil the role of decorations to be quickly snapped up. This annoys Frank Bruggeman, who has therefore created IKEA GARDENING: an indictment of the plant as an interior accessory, but at the same time a positive influence. It makes people aware of cultivation: plants are given space, and decorative fruits have been planted as seeds. IKEA ingredients:

IKEA is het perfecte familie winkelparadijs. Maar toen Mark Hoekstra door de IKEA slenterde begon er iets te knagen. Ze verkopen alles, voor ouders, voor kinderen, ze hebben simpelweg aan alles gedacht, echt alles. Van deurknoppen voor je keukenkastjes tot een goedkoop ijsje als je uitgewinkeld bent, er is niks wat aan de aandacht van onze Zweedse interieuropperheren is ontglipt. Maar..... waar is de seks? Iets wat er ook maar naar hint is afwezig in IKEA. De gemiddelde advertentie in 2008 bevat meer seks dan alle IKEA’s bij elkaar. Zelfs op de slaapkamerafdeling is er geen enkele aanleiding te denken dat mensen daar ook nog iets anders doen dan enkel slapen. Tijd voor verandering, en daarom de introductie van de IKEA LOVE TOY! De vraag blijft waarom IKEA ook maar de lichtste vorm van erotica negeert? Zullen ze de productlijn ooit pikanter maken? Of niet? IKEA heeft zijn eigen kijk op de wereld, dat is zeker. IKEA is the perfect family shopping paradise, but as Mark Hoekstra strolled through his hometown IKEA, something bothered him. They sell everything, for parents, for kids – they’ve thought of everything, simply everything. From knobs for your kitchen door to cheap ice cream after you’ve finished shopping, there's nothing that has escaped the minds of our Swedish interior overlords. But... where's the sex? Anything even hinting in that direction is totally absent in IKEA. The average advertisement in 2008 contains more sex than all of IKEA combined. Not even in the bedroom section is there any suggestion that people would do anything else there besides sleep. Time for a change: let’s hear it for the IKEA LOVE TOY! The question remains: Why does IKEA ban even the slightest hint of erotica from its stores? Will IKEA ever spice up its product line? Joseph ging op zoek naar een IKEA basisvorm die hij op allerlei verschillende manieren zou kunnen gebruiken. Net als IKEA dat doet met LACK, een hele lijn gemaakt van dezelfde vierkante poten en planken, wilde hij zelf ook een serie samenstellen uit één simpel basiselement. Het kruis, de simpelste vorm die hij kon vinden, dient normaliter alleen ter versteviging, maar speelt in BLÖCKSTÄR de hoofdrol. IKEA ingrediënten:

Just like IKEA does with LACK, a whole line made from similar square legs and shelves, he wanted to make a serie based on one simple basic element. The cross, the simplest shape he could find, normally is only used for reinformcement, but plays the leading role in BLÖCKSTÄR. IKEA ingredients:
