33 Haute Couture accessoires in wording, op zoek naar hun eigen vormentaal, is wellicht de beste omschrijving achteraf van de installatie No Reference van Christophe Coppens bij Platform21. De stukken zijn inmiddels ingepakt, maar voor wie deze bijzondere oefening van Coppens alsnog wil volgen, is er een prachtig boek verschenen. Tijdens de boekpresentatie blikte de Belgische couturier in een gesprek met criticus en curator Pieter van Bogaert terug op het ontwerpproces. "Het was een mooi experiment, maar ik ben blij dat ik weer hertjes en konijnen mag maken van mezelf."

Pieter van Bogaert schreef het voorwoord van het boek No References. Hierin vraagt hij zich af of het wel mogelijk is om zonder referenties te werken binnen een modecollectie. Hij besluit zijn voorwoord met het advies: '...zet de mensen zelf op het podium, maak van de bezoeker een acteur, van de gebruiker een regisseur. Maak je publiek deel van het proces.' Delen van het gesprek waarin Van Bogaert en Coppens terugblikken op het project, lees je hieronder. Over het maakproces in Platform21 Coppens begint: “Wat we voor ogen hadden, was een work in progress. De installatie als atelier waar ik, soms samen met publiek, verder zou werken aan de stukken. Dat is eigenlijk niet zo goed gelukt. Ik vond het moeilijk terug te keren naar werk dat voor mij al heel erg ‘af’ voelde en dat al gelanceerd was. Ook het werken aan de collectie met publiek vond ik moeilijk. De naaisters die zich op hadden gegeven waren heel goed, maar het zijn mensen die je niet kent; je weet niet wat ze kunnen en waar ze goed in zijn. Daarbij was vier uur per keer heel kort, ik kwam niet veel verder dan zoeken naar de juiste schaar en garen, uitleggen en voordoen.” Pieter van Bogaert: “Als ik nu naar de collectie kijk, heb ik het gevoel dat het minder af is dan bij de opening.” Coppens reageert: “Op de opening zaten er nog veel spelden in de stukken. Er is wel zo verder genaaid dat die nu weg zijn, maar ik heb er niet echt op doorgewerkt. Zangeres Roisin Murphy bewees het tegendeel en draagt die collectie nu tijdens haar optredens. Denk je dat ze deze collectie ook zal dragen?” Coppens: “Sommige stukken zijn echt niet gemaakt om te dragen. Wie wil er nou met een enorme tredmolen op haar rug lopen? Voor deze collectie heb ik gekeken wat een lichaam is, wat een holte is en wat de druk van een accessoire op het lichaam is. Ik ben dus niet bij nul begonnen, ik heb gekeken hoe ik een stap verder kon gaan, maar in principe passen alle stukken nog steeds op een lichaam en zijn dus in theorie draagbaar. Bovendien is het couture en zou het op het lichaam van de klant op maat gemaakt kunnen worden. Ik zag er erg tegenop om te beginnen aan deze collectie. Dat komt omdat het gaat over schrappen en weglaten, dat vind ik moeilijk. Er over nadenken was fijn, het doen was eng. Maar ik moest wel. Tot dan toe had ik twee couturecollecties gemaakt bestaande uit enorme pakken, zoals een cape met een levensgroot hert over de schouders gedrapeerd. De vraag was: ga ik nog groter en spectaculairder of is het juist uitdagender om het tegenovergestelde te doen? Normaal krijg je de middelen om een couturecollectie te maken niet cadeau. Nu kreeg ik het aangereikt als een geschenk, daarom voelde ik me verplicht mezelf verder te duwen. Morgen gaat het normale leven weer verder en moet ik weer dingen maken die iedereen wil hebben. Mijn favoriet is het geheel: het één beïnvloedt het ander. Materiaal, structuur en kleur: bij elkaar komt het allemaal samen. Zo is het ook opgesteld in de installatie. Als ik meer tijd en rust had gehad om aan de collectie te werken, had ik de stukken allemaal met elkaar verbonden om dit heel letterlijk te illustreren. Nu ik weet dat de installatie in september in het Boijmans van Beuningen te zien zal zijn? Ik zal de stukken in de tussentijd niet uitpakken. 33 Haute couture accessories coming into being, searching for their own form and style, might be the best description for the installation No Reference at Platform21 in retrospect. In the meanwhile the pieces have been wrapped and are no longer on show, but for those who still want to follow Coppens' special exercise, a beautiful book has been published. During the book launch, the Belgian couturier and critic and curator Pieter van Bogaert reviewed the design process in a public conversation. "It was a nice experiment, but I am very happy to return to making deer and rabbits."

Pieter van Bogaert wrote the preface to the book No References, in which he questions whether it is possible to work without references in a fashion collection. He ends his preface: 'put the people themselves on the stage, make the visitor an actor, the user a director. Make your public part of the process.' You can read parts of the conversation in which Van Bogaert and Coppens look back on the project below. About the making process Coppens starts: “What we had in mind was a work in progress. The installation as a studio in which I would continue to work on the pieces, sometimes together with visitors. That didn’t work out so well actually. I had difficulty returning to work that felt really ‘finished’ to me and that was already launched. I also found it hard to work on the collection with visitors. The seamstresses that had applied were skilled, but you don’t know these people; you don’t know what they can do and what they are good at. Furthermore the four hour sessions were really short, I didn’t come much further than looking for the right scissors and yarn, explaining and demonstrating.” Pieter van Bogaert: “When I look at the collection now I have the feeling it is less finished than it was during the opening.” Coppens reacts: “At the opening there still were pins in all the pieces. We did so much sewing as those needles are now out, but I haven’t really continued and developed the pieces further. Singer Roisin Murphy proved the opposite and wears that collection during her performances. Do you think she will wear this collection as well?” Coppens: “Some pieces are really not made to be worn. Who wants to walk around with an enormous treadmill on her back? For this collection I looked at what a body is, what a socket or hollow is and what the pressure of an accessory on the body is. I did not start from zero, I looked how I could take that next step, but in principle all pieces still fit on a body and are thus theoretically wearable. Besides, it is all couture, which we means we could make it to measure on the client’s body. I was resenting starting on this collection, because it is about editing and deleting, which I find difficult. It was nice to think about it, but to carry it out was scaring me. But I had to. Up till then I had made two couture collections consisting of huge outfits, like a cape with a life-sized deer draped over the shoulders. The question I had to ask myself was: will I go even bigger and more spectacular or is it a bigger challenge to do the opposite? Normally you don’t get all the means to make a couture collection for nothing. Now it was literally given to me as a gift, which made me feel obliged to push myself further. Tomorrow everyday life continues and I will have to make things that everyone wants to buy again. My favourite is the whole: how one thing influences the other. Material, structure and colour: it all comes together. I also installed it to work that way. If I would have had more time and peace to work on the collection, I would have connected all the different pieces with each other to illustrate this in a literal way. Now I know that the installation will be shown in the Boijmans van Beuningen in September? I will not unwrap the pieces in the meantime. Pieter van Bogaert ontmoette Christophe Coppens voor het eerst in 2001 in Brussel, waar hij werkt als criticus en curator. Sinds die eerste ontmoeting, komen ze elkaar regelmatig tegen. Voor het boek No Reference, dat aan het einde van het werkproces verscheen, schreef Van Bogaert de introductie. In de vorm van een brief aan Coppens, haalt hij herinneringen op aan Coppens' eerdere werk en vraagt zich af hoe hij al die referenties van zich af kan schudden:

“Je gooit alles overboord – alle referenties binnen je eigen werk, alle referenties naar boeken, naar kunstenaars, alle referenties binnen de mode, die van de materie en haar connotaties, van de technieken, van de vorm. Je wil opnieuw de bestaansreden, het doel van het accessoire bekijken. Je wil deze gelegenheid gebruiken om terug te keren naar de essentie van het ontwerp; om te denken en te zoeken. Niet: wat kan nog anders, beter, mooier, extravaganter? Niet: wat kan nog weggelaten of toegevoegd? Maar wel: wat is een kleur? Wat is een vorm? Wat is een accessoire? Wat is een mode? Wat is een lichaam? (...) Alle referenties overboord dus, en dan zien wat er gebeurt. De dingen laten leven. Je cliënteel het werk laten afmaken. Iedereen, producent en gebruiker, gelijk. De verbeelding aan de macht.” All references overboard

Pieter van Bogaert first met Christophe Coppens in Brussels in 2001, where he worked as a critic and curator. Since that first meeting, they regularly ran in to each other. For the book No Reference, which was published at the end of the working process, Van Bogaert wrote the introduction. In the form of a letter to Coppens, he recalls Coppens earlier work and questions how he can shake off all these references:

“You throw everything overboard – all references within your own work, all references to books and artists, all references within fashion, to material and its connotations, to techniques, to form. You aim to take a new look at the accessory’s raison d’être, its purpose. You want to use this opportunity to go back to the essence of the design, to think and to explore. It’s not about ‘What can I do differently, better, more beautifully, more extravagantly? Or ‘What can I add or take away?’ It’s about ‘What is a colour? What is a shape? What is an accessory? Christophe Coppens (Sint Niklaas, België, 1969) volgde een opleiding tot theaterregisseur en acteur. Al snel neemt hij niet alleen de regie van zijn stukken voor rekening, maar ook het kostuumontwerp. In 1990 opent hij zijn atelier en start met het maken van twee collecties per jaar. En dan gaat het snel: hij maakt hoeden in opdracht van o.a. Yohji Yamamoto en Guy Laroche, start een samenwerking met het Belgische koningshuis, exposeert en doet performances in België, Tokio en New York en Nederland, start met een interieurlijn en opent verschillende winkels in België en Japan.

Coppens is niet alleen een druk, maar ook veelzijdig man. Momenteel worden zijn twee mannen- en damescollecties per jaar (bestaande uit sjaals, hoeden, handschoenen, sieraden, lederwaren, stropdassen, manchetknopen etc.) verkocht in Japan, de VS, Europa en Hong Kong. Hij produceert twee Coppens bij CC lijnen per jaar en heeft al zeven interieurcollecties op zijn naam staan. Eens per jaar creëert hij een haute couture collectie / presentatie. Christophe Coppens was born in Belgium in 1969 and trained as a theatre director and actor. He was soon directing his own plays as well as designing the costumes. In 1990, he opened his own studio and began producing two collections a year. From there, things snowballed: he made hats for Yohji Yamamoto and Guy Laroche; began working with the Belgian royal family; did exhibitions and performances in Belgium, the Netherlands, Tokyo and New York; started an interior products range; and opened shops in Belgium and Japan.

Christophe Coppens is not only busy but versatile. He produces two men’s and women’s collections per year (consisting of scarves, hats, gloves, jewellery, leather goods, ties, cufflinks, and so on), which are currently sold in Japan, the US, Europe and Hong Kong. He also produces two Coppens bij CC ranges a year and already has seven interior collections to his name. Once a year, he creates a haute couture collection and show. De H+F Fashion Award, die tweejaarlijks wordt uitgereikt, is een stimuleringsprijs voor de meest veelbelovende ontwerper werkend op het grensvlak van mode en kunst.

De award sluit aan op het H+F Fashion on the Edge initiatief dat schrijver en kunstverzamelaar Han Nefkens in 2006 startte in samenwerking met het Centraal Museum Utrecht en dat mode verzamelt op het grensvlak van mode en kunst. Rond dit thema wordt momenteel ook een overzichtstentoonstelling voor het Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam voorbereid, genaamd The Art of Fashion. Voor de H+F Award en H+F Fashion on the Edge werkt Nefkens structureel samen met Judith Clark (curator en researcher London College of Fashion) en lector Modevormgeving ArtEZ José Teunissen. The H+F Fashion Award is given every two years to the most promising designer working at the boundary of fashion and art.

The award is linked to H+F Fashion on the Edge, a project to collect fashion that borders on art, which was founded in 2006 by Han Nefkens with the Centraal Museum Utrecht. An overview exhibition on the same theme, The Art of Fashion, is being assembled for the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Judith Clark, a curator and researcher at the London College of Fashion, and José Teunissen, a fashion design lecturer at ArtEZ, work with Nefkens on the H+F Award and H+F Fashion on the Edge. Han Nefkens Writer Han Nefkens, born in 1954 in Rotterdam, began to amass a collection of international contemporary art in 2000. His own life and development are decisive factors in the choices he makes as a collector.
