We received over 60 entries from all over the world in our Most Remarkable Repair Contest. They are all listed here. Do find yourself inspired by these clever repairs and pick your favourite. Sunday 30 August, during the last day of Platform21 = Repairing, we announced who made the most remarkable repair according to our jury. The jury, consisting of amateur repairwoman and hotel owner Suzanne Oxenaar (Lloyd Hotel), tool tester and editor-in-chief Erwin van der Zande (Bright), and curator and inventor Arne Hendriks (Platform21), picked a winner and runner-up from ten nominees. Winner Siba Sahabi got to take home the special Repair Award created by artist Jan Vormann, and received an extensive Dremel toolkit. Also runner-up Capyso Schuijt was awarded a multifunctional Dremel. A shortlist of the best entries will be published in Bright magazine of October/ November.

How could it be enlarged again? Cutting the fabric in a brick pattern made the shrunken sweater stretchable again and by putting it on, it adjusted into a wearable size automatically. At least, it doesn’t respond to some of the buttons. And that is very annoying, especially when the ‘On’ button doesn’t function or only sometimes. So I opened up the microwave and examined it. It appeared that the keyboard simply didn’t make the right connections at some buttons. With a strong lens cracks in the flat cable were visible. Maybe they were caused by year of vibration? When I enquired about a new keyboard I learned this would cost 170 guilders. Well, then I’d better make sure the keyboard was really causing this problem. Do you know what? We will replicate the keyboard! So I did. First I found out which combinations of cables would result in which functions. Wooden slat, copper thread, nails, plastic… And then with ten wires, taken from an old telephone cable, at the bottom of the keyboard cable soldered to the print. And… It works! All ‘buttons’ are functioning again! Shall I buy the new keyboard now? Ah, why actually? Lets just attach this one to the front of the microwave, at its original spot. This has been working for nine years now. When a friend experienced the same defect with a practically similar microwave I made her a classy version of this solution, which has been working for four years now. Jazeker! Ik vond een stuk stof in een opslag vol afgekeurd textiel. Ik gebruik het als theedoek, maar er zit een gat in. Voor de reparatie was ik geïnspireerd door de ouderwetse techniek gebruikt voor het stoppen van sokken. De theedoek heeft een pied-de-poule motief dat ik wilde behouden. Het was een tijdrovende en moeilijke klus en na een uur zag ik al een beetje scheel, maar het was zeker de moeite waard. Ik heb niet alleen een nieuwe techniek geleerd, maar ik ben ook opeens veel meer van deze gekke theedoek gaan houden als ik daarvoor deed. Ik verheug me al een beetje op het volgende gat. That is also how I ended up working with plants. I perforated leafs of different plants. This may seem natural, but actually I took my inspiration from nature, from caterpillars for instance and the monstera delicousa (also knon as hole plant). When it turned out that the afterwards the plants keep developing and even made these interventions their own, I also started researched it the other way around: to repair injured leafs. For this design I replaced the deceased part of the leave with textile, instead of cutting the doomed leaf and throwing it away. Nienke van der Meulen NOMINEE <img src="fig69" alt="fig69" /> Bison Kintsugi. I developed a new view of gluing porcelain based on kintsugi, an old Japanese technique in which porcelain is repaired with gold leaf. It’s an extremely time-consuming, expensive method. The steering and pedal drive were the only things still functioning. After a big transformation including removing wooden doors, seats and a lot of rust, lowering the steering wheel and moving the handbrake, it now drives perfectly! The surface was not strong enough to glue, so I put all sorts of rubbish I had lying around – a wire to close a plastic lunch bag with, a plug that I cut to size – in the hole. As the material of the plug springs a bit, you can now click the batteries in again so they touch the metal. With this new bit of wood I can use it again and I think it looks prettier and more robust now. I could sew them shut, but why pretend the gap was never there? Inspired by a building, which usually has a concrete skeleton as a main supporting structure, I found that the seams of the shirts are like this structure. They hold the piece together and provide strong anchoring points. Instead of covering up the holes I just took their width and length and cut it out in a square shape and re-attached it to the nearest seem. This created a new 3D shape. The hole not only becomes emphasized but it also becomes a guideline for a new form within the garment. I put the glass top of the bottle on the bottom of a plastic bottle so it could contain fluids again. Unfortunately the glass broke during my repair so I had to find a way in which to hold the pieces tidely together. I wrapped it as tight as I could in cotton thread. Now it also better suited for warm drinks, which stay warm longer now the bottle has a new coat. I used old threads from the fifties for its repair which I crocheted and then used these thicker threads to sew the parts together. Crocheting was the first thing I learnt that had to do with sewing. As a child I would see my mother making beautiful things and think: I want to be able to do that too. Later I also learnt how to knit and make clothes on the sewing machine. It felt good to go back to crocheting to repair this old suitcase. It was both a kind of repairing and styling. I chose to work with hex nuts, because I would like to give the hex nuts a new function instead of just seeing them as a building material used with screws. The result is a shoe, which is very rough and masculine with all the metal and hex nuts, but on the same time it also is very feminine as the hex nuts catch the light and almost look like some shiny jewelry. There were small and big tears in the leather. As a pattern these tears looked quite attractive and I decided to use this quality. I started to fill these tears with white wool. Quickly I had the feeling something was growing out of the chair and that it was starting to live. It is not a logical way of repairing, but when is something repaired? When is the repair finished and when is it beautiful? These things can be arguable. When I felt like my repair was finished I had the feeling as if something was growing out of the chair, some sort of clouds. Therefore I named it ‘ With the Chair in the Clouds’. Luckily, because this accident made the standard lamp into something different. With the repair I exegerated its new unique character. We looked for other couches, but couldn't find anything as long and comfortable for a decent price. So, I decided this would be my project. I found a fabric close to the original, added new springs, replaced padding, and replaced the cushions. I kept the original buttons. Like I am to this cheese cheeseslicer, which makes slices with exactly the right width, but of which the wooden handle split. This is already the second time I repaired a cheeseslicer in this way: with a garden hose clamp and a little bit of glue to keep it waterproof. It has already lasted for several years now; it only can’t go in the dishwasher! I also repaired the glass lid to my favourite saucepan, of which the knob broke. At the hardware store I found a fitting door handle and with some extra rings it is solidly attached again! He smoked back then, but couldn’t finish a whole cigarette. He would stub it out and would put the butt in his pocket. You guess it; once it wasn’t stubbed out well and it burned a whole in his pocket. A waste of that beautiful coat. At the time I was sewing a jeans jacket with a bright pink teddy lining. This fabric exactly matched the fabric of the coat and the colour difference only surprising. So I put a sampler in the hole and the coat is still around, we use it to work in the garden. I have repaired things all my life, but I don’t think of myself as a miser, but do have a conscious. There are countless violins from the 17th century, also from Amsterdam, that are still played at a daily basis. My entry is the repair of the violin Dutch artist Ellen ten Damme brought to me. During a hasty set change a roadie pushed the violin case shut while the violin was not placed in the correct way. This resulted in 23 long cracks in the top. With stage tape they carefully taped the pieces together. After about three weeks, in which the cracks were glued one by one and were enforced on the inside by small diamantes – small pieces of wood – I could start retouching the lacquer. After another week the violin could be played again. The costs of such a repair are not so bad; only a fraction of what it would cost to buy a new comparable instrument. The steel is exactly hard enough and still sharp after years of sharpening. The grip is very pleasant because of the balance, the shape and size of the handle. That is why I wanted to repair it when the knife started to show defaults: notable leeway in the connection between the handle and blade and visible cracks. Twice I dislodged the handle from the blade, drilled the hole open and glued the parts back together, but this solution only lasted a few months each time and then loosened again. Eventually I made a plaster cast of the whole knife, so I had a mould. Afterwards I again removed the handle and sanded the blade clean. Afterwards I put the blade in the mould and poored a new handle with resin. Voila: the original shape was kept, the balance is still perfect and the resin feels warmer and therefore more pleasant than the original plastic. Courageously I loaded the trunk of my car full with glass: the student halls were cleaned up and in good spirits I drove to the bottle bank somewhere in the harbour at the other side of town. I wildly stepped on the accelerator and suddenly it ended up on the floor brought back to its essence: a steel plate on a string. At the time it made me go into a panic. I looked for a telephone booth and called home. Very romantically my sweetheart raced over on his bike. The transfer from accelerator to motor was restored within 15 minutes with a paperclip he found in his pocket. I am still impressed by it, by the paperclip and my sweetheart. He renovates the house, repairs old Vespas, espresso machines and the toys of our children. That paperclip and the Renault 4 F6 to me are still a symbol of his skills and inventiveness. At our first visit to the villagers, their curious eyes shown no more than surprise and uncertainty, but with our second visit, we had the pleasure of having the villagers themselves sitting and fixing objects together with us. The term topology refers to the ability to transform the nature of the problem from one about logic to one about space. Whenever my girlfriend and I start fighting about the same idea, we try the topological jacket on. It consists in two broken jackets stitched together by the right side and facing different directions. By wearing the jacket we realize that we are walking in the same direction but we have different perspective. The topological jacket repairs our relationship not only with symbolisms and semantics but also by creating a fun dynamic that transforms our bad mood and obnoxious stubbornness into a game where we end up laughing. A short introduction: My mother, Margreet Beemsterboer, is a professional embroiderer and chief editor of the magazine 'Handwerken zonder Grenzen'. To attract a younger public she thought of a way to repair a pair of jeans. Jeans are bought 'worn' and 'destroyed' in the shops these days... But a heavily washed and 'damaged' jeans, damages further even easier. To keep it from tearing and still respect the 'worn' and 'vintage' look, my mother repaired my jeans with authentic repair stitches and weaving techniques, as used to be done to repair clothes and socks by hand in the old days. By hand she's woven threads back into the torn fabric, so that the weft-threads (that were still there) were completed with new warp-threads to 'close' and repair the fabric. To keep it looking authentic and 'denim' she's used heavy cotton and linen yarns, and even added some decorative stitches to complete the jeans and make it even nicer. The end result is a very 'vintage' looking pair of jeans, that's not easily torn any further, made very modern and refined by the beautifully handmade repair work. Winnaar Siba Shabi ontving de speciale Repair Award, gemaakt door kunstenaar Jan Vormann, en nam een uitgebreide Dremel toolset mee naar huis. Ook runner-up Calypso Schuijt ontving zo'n pakket. Althans, hij reageert niet meer op sommige toetsen. En dat is erg vervelend, vooral als de ‘Aan’ knop het niet doet, of het alleen soms doet...  De magnetron dus opengemaakt en onderzocht. Het leek erop dat het toetsenbord simpelweg geen verbinding maakte bij sommige toetsen. Met een sterke lens konden scheurtjes in de platte kabel gezien worden. Misschien zijn deze ontstaan door trilling in de loop der jaren?  Informeren naar een nieuw toetsenbord leerde dat deze 170 gulden moest kosten. Nou! Dan zouden we toch wel heel zeker willen weten dat het inderdaad echt aan het toetsenbord ligt.  Weet je wat? We bouwen het toetsenbord na! Zo gedacht, zo gedaan. Eerst uitgezocht welke combinaties van draden welke functies bewerkstelligen. Houten plankje, koperdraad, spijkers, plastic... En deze vervolgens met tien draadjes, gehaald uit een stuk oude telefoonkabel, aan de voet van de toetsenbordkabel op de print vast gesoldeerd.  Warempel. Het werkt! Alle ‘knoppen’ werken!  Nu dan maar een nieuw toetsenbord kopen?? Ahhh, waarom eigenlijk? Nu hebben we toch al dit test toetsenbord? Jazeker! Ik vond een stuk stof in een opslag vol afgekeurd textiel. Ik gebruik het als theedoek, maar er zit een gat in. Voor de reparatie was ik geïnspireerd door de ouderwetse techniek gebruikt voor het stoppen van sokken. De theedoek heeft een pied-de-poule motief dat ik wilde behouden. Het was een tijdrovende en moeilijke klus en na een uur zag ik al een beetje scheel, maar het was zeker de moeite waard. Ik heb niet alleen een nieuwe techniek geleerd, maar ik ben ook opeens veel meer van deze gekke theedoek gaan houden als ik daarvoor deed. Ik verheug me al een beetje op het volgende gat. Op die manier ben ik ook terecht gekomen bij planten. Zo heb ik perforaties aangebracht in de balderen van verschillende planten. Ondanks dat het aanbrengen van deze patronen tegennatuurlijk lijkt, heb ik inspiratie hiervoor geput uit de natuur zelf: bij rupsen en de monstera delicousa (ook wel gatenplant). Toen bleek dat de planten zich verder ontwikkelden en zelfs deze ingrepen toeeigenden ben ik ook de andere kant gaan onderzoeken: door bladeren die gehavend zijn te repareren. Zo heb ik ook voor dit ontwerp bij een Lepelplant het afgestorven deel van het blad vervangen door textiel, in plaats van het verdoemde blad af te knippen en weg te gooien. Ik ontwikkelde een andere kijk op het lijmen van porselein gebaseerd op Kintsugi, een oude Japanse techniek waarbij porselein wordt gerepareerd met bladgoud. Een zeer bewerkelijke en kostbare methode. In Bison lijm vond ik de perfecte Westerse variant voor prachtige maar simpele reparaties. De schoonheid van slordig repareren. Het oppervlak was niet sterk genoeg om te lijmen, dus heb ik allerlei troepjes die voor handen waren – een boterhamzak afsluitbindertje, een stukje plug op maat geknipt – in het gat gestopt. Doordat het materiaal van de plug een beetje veert, kun je de batterijen er nu weer goed in klikken en maken ze contact met het metaal. Geïnspireerd door architectuur, ontdekte ik dat de naden van mijn shirts gezien kunnen worden als het betonnen skelet van een gebouw. Ze houden het geheel bij elkaar en zijn sterke bevestigingspunten. Ik knipte de gaten in hun breedte en lengte uit, waardoor er een vierkant gat ontstond, en bevestigde dit weer aan de dichtstbijzijnde naad. Het gat wordt niet alleen benadrukt, maar het wordt ook een nieuwe richtlijn voor een nieuwe vorm in het kledingstuk. Helaas brak het glazen deel tijdens het repareren in stukken en moest ik op zoek naar een manier om de stukken stevig bij elkaar te houden. Dit werd een bol katoendraad die ik zo stevig mogelijk om de stukken heb gewikkeld. Hij is nu bovendien beter geschikt voor warme dranken – die blijven door zijn nieuwe jas langer warm. Voor de reparatie heb ik oude draden uit de jaren 50 gevingerhaakt en hiermee de koffer weer in elkaar genaaid. Vingerhaken is het eerste wat ik leerde dat met naaien te maken heeft. Als kind zag ik mijn moeder allerlei mooie dingen maken en dacht: dat wil ik ook. Later leerde ik ook breien, op de naaimachine kleren maken etc. Het voelde dan ook goed om terug te gaan naar het vingerhaken om deze oude koffer te repareren. Het resultaat is een schoen die er aan de ene kant heel ruig en mannelijk uitziet, maar ook heel vrouwelijk is wanneer het licht op de bouten valt ze er bijna uitzien als glinsterende juwelen. Er zate kleine en grote inkepingen in de leren bekleding. Als patroon zagen deze er al erg mooi uit en daar wilde ik iets mee te doen. Ik ben de inkepingen gaan vullen met wit wol en kreeg al snel het idee dat de stoel begon te leven. Het is geen logische manier van repareren, maar wanneer is iets gerepareerd? Wanneer is het af en waneer is iets mooi af? Daar kunnen vele discussies over ontstaan. Toen de stoel voor mij af was kreeg ik het gevoel dat er iets uitgroeide, een soort van wolken. Vandaar dat ik ‘m de naam heb gegeven ‘Met de stoel in de Wolken’. We hebben naar andere banken gezocht, maar konden er geen vinden die betaalbaar was en zo lang en comfortabel als onze oude vertrouwde bank. Dus besloot ik dat dit mijn project werd. Ik vond een stuk stof dat leek op het origineel, verving de veren, vernieuwde de vulling en verving de kussens. De originele knopen heb ik gehouden. Dit is al de tweede kaasschaaf die ik zo repareerde: met een kleine tuinslangenklem (gekocht bij de Wibra) en een beetje kit om hem waterdicht te houden. Gaat al weer enige jaren mee, mag alleen niet in de afwasmachine! En het glazen deksel van mijn favoriete steelpannetje, waarvan de knop afbrak. Ik vond bij de Gamma op de afdeling keukenkastjes een passend deurknopje, zit met wat extra ringetjes weer muurvast! Hij rookte toen, maar kon een sigaret niet helemaal oproken. Hij maakte hem uit en deed de peuk in de jaszak. En je raadt het al, niet goed uit en een gat in de zak. Zonde van die mooie jas. Ik was bezig een jas te naaien van spijkerstof met een prachtige felroze teddy voering. Deze stof paste precies bij de stof van de jas. En een andere kleur was alleen maar verrassend. Dus er kwam een stoplap in en de jas is er nog steeds en wordt gebruikt in de tuin. Ik heb altijd gerepareerd, maar vind mezelf geen vrek of een consuminderaar, wel bewust. Talloze instrumenten komen uit de 17 de eeuw, ook uit Amsterdam, en worden nog dagelijks bespeelt. De reparatie die ik heb ingestuurd is van de viool die Ellen ten Damme bij me bracht. Bij een haastige setwisseling had een roadie de vioolkist dichtgedrukt terwijl de viool er niet goed in lag: 23 lange scheuren in het bovenblad. Met podiumtape hadden ze de splinters nog liefdevol bijeen weten te plakken. Na ongeveer drie weken, waarin de barsten weer één voor één worden gelijmd en aan de binnenkant worden verstevigd met 'diamantjes' -kleine stukjes hout - kon de retouche van de lak beginnen. Na nog een week was de viool weer speelklaar. De kosten van zo’n reparatie vallen mee; een fractie van een nieuw te kopen, vergelijkbaar instrument. Het staal is precies hard genoeg, en na jarenlang regelmatig slijpen nog goed scherp. Ook is ligging in de hand heel erg prettig door de balans, maat en vorm van het heft. Daarom wilde ik het repareren toen bleek dat het mes problemen kreeg: voelbare speling in de verbinding tussen lemmet en heft en zichtbare scheurtjes. Tot twee keer toe heb ik het heft losgewrikt, het gat open geboord en daarna het lemmet opnieuw vastgelijmd, maar die oplossing hielt telkens een paar maanden en liet toen weer los. Uiteindelijk heb ik toen een gipsen afgietsel van het hele mes gemaakt, zodat ik een mal had. Daarna heb ik opnieuw het heft verwijderd en lemmet schoon geschuurd. Vervolgens het lemmet in de mal gelegd en er met kunsthars een nieuw heft aan vast gegoten. Voilá: de originele vorm is behouden, de gewichtsverdeling is goed, en bovendien voelt de kunsthars warmer en daarmee prettiger aan dan het oorspronkelijke plastic. Ik heb 'm overgespoten in zwart, maar bij de witte kleine toetsjes zie je de oude lak nog -Het mechaniek was los aan de binnenkant, die heb ik hersteld -De leren banden heb ik vervangen of ingekort zodat ze weer pasten. Voilà! Vooral het plexiglas vond ik geslaagd. Bovendien speelt hij weer, er mist alleen 1 zwarte toets. We hebben ze in diverse soorten en maten gehad, dé repair it yourself auto bij uitstek. Het meest legendarisch was de reparatie aan de witte Renault 4 F6 toen ik voor het eerst alleen in een auto reed na het behalen van mijn rijexamen. Dapper laadde ik de hele auto vol; het studentenhuis werd uitgemest en vol goede moed reed ik met een laadbak vol glas naar de glasbak, ergens diep in Amsterdam West bij de haven. Wild trapte ik het gaspedaal in en opeens lag op de laadvloer het pedaal teruggebracht naar haar essentie: een plaatje staal aan een touwtje, zielig als een dood vogeltje. Daar raakte ik destijds aardig van in paniek. Een telefooncel gezocht en naar huis gebeld. Ultraromantisch: op de fiets kwam lief aangesjeesd. De overbrenging van het gaspedaal naar de motor werd binnen een kwartiertje in ere hersteld met een in zijn broekzak gevonden paperclip. Daar ben ik nog steeds van onder de indruk, van Renault 4 én lief. Hij verbouwt ons huis, repareert oude Vespa’s, espressomachines en al het speelgoed van onze twee kinderen. Symbool voor die handigheid en vindingrijkheid staat voor mij nog steeds DE paperclip & de Renault 4 F6. Gefascineerd door de tekenen van ouderdom en historie in objecten bij mensen thuis, ben ik samen met Sanjeev Maharjan het dorp Badhikel rond gegaan om deze voorwerpen in vervallen staat te verzamelen. Sanjeev en ik repareerde gebroken pannen, schoenen en potten met dik draad en naalden. De reparaties benadrukten en versterkten de schoonheid van de gebruikssporen. Tijdens ons eerste bezoek aan het dorp, werden we nieuwsgierig aanschouwd door verrasde bewoners, maar bij ons tweede bezoek kwamen ze bij ons zitten om samen met ons te repareren. Het was een eer om samen met ze te werken en hun creativiteit en toewijding te ervaren en het werd het hoogtepunt van onze reis. Een sociale barriere werd verbroken en veranderde in een gevoel van verbondenheid: onze missie was volbracht. We ontdekken dat onze verschillende opleidingen en nationale achtergronden botsen wanneer we proberen samen te werken. Er zijn dagen dat we elkaar precies begrijpen, en dagen die uitlopen in een grote ruzie. Deze scheuren in onze zakelijke relatie breiden zich uit naar onze liefdesrelatie en dus vond ik het tijd om deze te repareren! Daarom ontwierp ik het topologische jack. De term topologie verwijst naar het vermogen om de aard van een probleem te transformeren van logisch naar ruimtelijk. Wanneer mijn vriendin en ik nu ruzie hebben over hetzelfde idee trekken we het jack aan dat gemaakt is van twee kapotte jassen met de rechterzijdes aan elkaar genaaid maar ieder in een andere richting. Zo realiseren we ons dat we beide dezelfde kant op gaan maar dingen anders zien. Het is niet alleen een symbolische reparatie, maar ook een die onze koppige en boze stemming doet verdwijnen wanneer we klungelig dezelfde kant op proberen te lopen en heel hard moeten lachen! Mijn moeder, Margreet Beemsterboer, is professioneel borduurster en hoofdredactrice van het vakblad Handwerk zonder Grenzen. Om een jonger publiek aan te spreken met het blad, bedacht ze een mooie manier om een spijkerbroek te repareren. Versleten jeans zijn hip en aan een gedragen look geven we veel geld uit. Maar beschadigde jeans scheurt makkelijk verder door. Om de broek hiervoor te beschermen, maar de vintage look wel te behouden, repareerde mijn moeder mijn spijkerbroek met authentieke reparatiesteken en weeftechnieken, zoals vroeger kledingstukken en sokken werden gerepareerd. Met de hand weefde ze nieuwe scherende draden door de inslag (die er nog wel was). Ze gebruikte dikke katoenen draad om de jeans look te behouden en maakte zelfs decoratieve steken, zodat de broek alleen maar mooier werd. Het eindresultaat is een broek die er erg vintage uitziet, maar niet snel verder doorscheurd, maar ook modern en verfijnd is door het prachtige handwerk. Alle fotografie door Michel Mulder. Voor een reden die ik niet kan benoemen, vond ik ‘m erg mooi en nam ‘m overal mee naar toe. Het was zomer, het was heet, geen regen en de zon scheen. En ik liep rond met een paraplu; mensen vonden me een beetje vreemd. Na een tijdje was ik het zat dat mensen er naar bleven vragen en de paraplu werd gammel en nu hangt ‘ie alweer een tijdje aan het plafond. Ik besloot ‘m eindelijk te repareren, maar niet op een standaard manier. Ik heb onnodige dingen uit mijn dagelijks leven gebruikt, maar wel dingen die en speciale betekenis voor mij hebben. Maar je wilt ook niet onderdoen voor je vrienden en bijblijven met de tijd? Lap je ego op! Letterlijk! Je computer gecrashed en je hebt nu nét even geen geld om een nieuwe te kopen? Lap ‘m op…. … en in een mum van tijd is je laptop weer als vanouds! Je hoeft je niet meer te schamen tegenover je vrienden omdat je niet mee kunt met de laatste trends. Ziet jouw voorraadkast er de laatste weken ook zo uit: bijna leeg? Lap ‘m op….. … en je kunt weer ongegeneerd je vrienden thuis uitnodigen (hmmm, om Chinees te bestellen?!) Het resultaat kan verassend creatief óf realistisch zijn. Het laat op een ironische manier de (minst belangrijke) gevolgen van een ‘crisis’ zien: het opent een discussie over de mate van belangrijkheid van het uiterlijk, het voordoen van hoe je graag zou zijn, het wegvagen van identiteit. En dat in een tijd dat iedereen juist terug naar zijn basis geworpen zou (moeten) worden. Zijn lenzen hadden dezelfde sterkte als mijn eigen bril maar links-rechts verwisseld. Ik kwam op het idee om een snookerbril voor mijzelf te maken. Namelijk, bij het snookeren hang je laag over de tafel en kijk je hoog door de glazen. In de regel is de bovenrand van de glazen te laag voor dit doel. Maar als ik nou een bril omdraai, dan komt er veel meer glas bovenin. Het was slechts nodig om de twee veren om te zetten en een neussteuntje van een andere oude bril te monteren. Dit laatste gedaan met drie dicht binders van plastic lunchzakjes. Ik verzamel al vier jaar lang dit soort meubels en materialen. Sommige dingen hebben helemaal geen reparatie nodig en moeten alleen wat schoongemaakt worden, andere hebben wat reparatie en een opfrisser nodig: een nieuw likje verf, nieuw schuimrubber of een nieuwe zitting. Sommige dingen vragen erom opnieuw uitgevonden te worden. Als er enkel nog wat onderdelen bruikbaar zijn, neem ik die ook mee. Ik verdeel mijn projecten in gerepareerd, geherinterpreteerd en gecreëerd. The last few months the Manifesto has been downloaded, blogged about and adopted all over the world. The Repair Manifesto is part of the project <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/page/4315/nl?lang=en">Platform21 = Repairing</a> for which we sought to make repairing cool again – over a period of five months. Both with the help of designers and visitors, new repair techniques were developed and many ingenious repairs were carried out in Platform21. Although the project has now ended in Platform21, it doesn't mean we are dropping the repair mentality. Platform21 = Repairing will soon travel to New York, and we hope the manifesto will keep inspiring people to STOP RECYCLING and START REPAIRING! So rediscover the joy of fixing things and share your repair knowledge. Together we can keep this movement going, one that isn’t new per se but has been forgotten. Het Repair Manifesto van Platform21 zet zich af tegen de wegwerpmaatschappij en viert repareren als het nieuwe recyclen. De afgelopen maanden is het manifest ontelbare keren gedownload, is er heel vaak over geblogd en zijn de elf punten geadopteerd door mensen wereldwijd. Het Repair Manifesto is onderdeel van het project <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/page/4315/nl">Platform21 = Repairing</a> waarmee we vijf maanden lang probeerden het repareren in ere herstellen. Met de hulp van ontwerpers en publiek zijn er nieuwe reparatietechnieken ontwikkeld en talloze ingenieuze reparaties uitgevoerd in Platform21. Dat het project in Platform21 afgelopen is, betekent niet dat we het repareren laten voor wat het is. Platform21 = Repairing gaat naar New York, en we hopen dat het manifesto mensen blijft inspireren: STOP RECYCLING, START REPAIRING! Sahabi repaired a simple plastic bag that got caught between the spokes of her bicycle, and decorated it with an embroidered reference to the action that damaged the bag. In this manner she made a series of five fragile bags that all carry a special memory. They are not just pretty, Siba Sahabi’s entry questions if there is space for imperfection: objects with a handicap, oddity or story. Because, to be honest, even after repair the bags are not very robust.

The jury praised the way in which Sahabi transformed a plastic bag, symbol to the throwaway society, from something worthless into something valuable. Something breaking down or ripping is no longer seen as negative, but as a motive to be creative and an opportunity to tell a new story. Sahabi literally does that by giving the bag a diary function. During the award ceremony on Sunday 30 August Sahabi received the one and only Repair Award created by artist Jan Vormann. She also took home an extensive tool set that Dremel awarded her with. Next to a winner, the jury, consisting of amateur repairwoman and hotel owner of the Lloyd Hotel Suzanne Oxenaar, tool tester and editor-in-chief Erwin van der Zande of Bright, and curator and inventor Arne Hendriks of Platform21, also selected a runner-up. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/5635"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/661/5635-400-290.jpg" height="290" width="400" alt="Shrunken sweater, Calypso Schuijt" title="Shrunken sweater, Calypso Schuijt" /></a><a title="Click to get a larger image - Shrunken sweater, Calypso Schuijt - Platform 21" href="/page/5635/en">Shrunken sweater, Calypso Schuijt</a> The problem of Calypso Schuijt was a familiar one: in laundry her wool sweater had shrunk. Not wanting to give up on her favourite sweater she looked for a way in which to enlarge it again. By cutting a brick pattern in the fabric, it regained its stretch and so the sweater stretched to a wearable size again when she put it on. The jury admired the way in which Schuijt repaired the sweater by damaging it even more: by cutting holes in it. This contrast promotes a new way of thinking. Dremel also congratuled Calypso with a Dremel toolset. And the winner is... Siba Sahabi met haar gerepareerde eendagstassen

Siba Sahabi repareerde een simpele witte plastic tas die tussen de spaken van haar fiets kwam, en decoreerde deze met een geborduurde verwijzing naar hoe de tas beschadigd raakte. Zo maakte ze een serie van vijf fragiele tasjes, die ieder een bepaalde herinnering meekregen. Het zijn niet zomaar mooie tasjes geworden, Siba Sahabi wil met haar inzending de vraag oproepen of er ruimte is voor imperfectie: objecten met een handicap, eigenaardigheid of verhaal. Want, eerlijk is eerlijk, echt stevig is de tas ook na reparatie niet.

De jury prees de manier waarop Sahabi een platsic tasje, symbool voor de wegwerpmaatschappij, met haar reparatie omzet van iets waardeloos in iets waardevols. With her Wool Filler technique, Heleen Klopper has won the incentive prize of €5000,- in the running for DOEN | Materiaalprijs 2009 (DOEN | Materials Prize). The jury report states: "Klopper's design is brilliant in its simplicity. Using the natural characteristics of wool - the scales tangle together - she created a Do It Yourself kit with which everyone can mend holes in their clothing, carpets, curtains or other textile products in a simple but original manner. Repairing garments and other textile products is a sustainable activity, because jumpers, cardigans or carpets gain a longer life. You can see Wool Filler as a solution from Grandma's time but with new style. It is funny, decorative, effective and has an original result. Furthermore it is very entertaining to do: the members of the jury really enjoyed trying Wool Filler for themselves."

The award, jointly organised by the Materiaalfonds and Stichting DOEN, seeks to promote sustainable design and the innovative use of materials in the visual art and design disciplines. The DOEN | Materiaalprijs 2009 challenged fine artists and designers to come up with sustainable design projects that combine innovative materials with stylishness, beauty and functionality. High quality and cutting-edge materials, recycling and upcycling, sustainable design, ecodesign, cradle to cradle and biomimicry can all help to create a better environment. The prize of €15.000,- went to Chris Kabel and his Seam Chair and Seam Bench. Ook mensen met twee linkerhanden. If we can buy something which is cheaper than the high quality products, are we still willing to repair it? And is it worth repairing when it is more expensive than buy a new one? So the basic question is, are we, especially in times of crisis, going to spend more €’s on high quality, and then, after years of intens usage, going to repair it; or are we keep buying the cheap stuff and replace it every time it breaks? The blade did not turn. I toggled it off again and yanked the plug from the wall as fast as I could. I was flying about, fixing things for people with money, and when I had moments I tried to look up a replacement motor... and I could not find one. Anywhere! I found a scan of the manual, though, from 1965 when the saw was built. The manual showed that the motor was not considered to be a part. The armature, the brushes, the bolts, and other pieces of the motor were all parts. The motor was not. Apparently in 1959, when the motor was designed, a table saw motor was intended to be repaired - rewound, if necessary, but not ever replaced. The motor design was so successful they were still using it throughout the 1960s. So I took the motor apart late one night. Mud dauber wasps had flown into the ventilation slots, and in a matter of a week or so had filled all the empty spaces in the motor with mud, wasp grubs, and paralyzed spiders. I gave the spiders and grubs to little fish in the stream behind the house, and carefully washed out the mud, and reassembled the motor. By which I mean hem a pair of pants, mend a ripped seam, and sew on a button or a patch. Takes nothing but a spool of thread, a needle, and a small pair of scissors, maybe a little scrap of fabric or a button, and you can learn all that in and hour or two. Clothing is already made repairable- it comes with spare buttons all the time. And unlike many of these other things people are talking about, it doesn't take a workshop or tons of skill to do the repair. Plastic is difficult to repair, since it's brittle and doesn't paint or glue easily, but with epoxy and properly clamped you can at least make an item usable again until you can find a suitable replacement. The problem with user repairable items is that typically you need to find a version that is made of metal or wood, or both - repairable and paintable materials. Following the Repair Manifesto, I wanted to share a little success story repairing something. Our hand mixer stopped working. It was a hand-me-down from my side of the family, and Cimmorene loved it because she had another set of beaters (I think it they were for a cheap hand mixer that fell apart) that she liked and that fit. Well I mentioned it to my mother, since I thought I was going to have to throw it out, and she mentioned that my paternal grandfather had taken apart her Sunbeam Mixmaster when it stopped working, blew out the dust, put it back together, and it worked again. So I thought, "I bet I could do the same thing with this hand mixer" and today I did just that. It's an old General Electric in an awful shade of green that apparently was popular after WWII, but when I took it apart, I could see that it was good, solid construction. I figured the gears turning the beaters were the problem, and so I sprayed it with a little lubricant. I finally decided to take the gear assembly apart, and as I popped out the gears, I could see there was peanut butter in them, mostly underneath the gear shaft. But it's hubristic to think that your design is perfect or that your product will never break. The blade did not turn. I toggled it off again and yanked the plug from the wall as fast as I could. I was flying about, fixing things for people with money, and when I had moments I tried to look up a replacement motor... and I could not find one. Anywhere! I found a scan of the manual, though, from 1965 when the saw was built. The manual showed that the motor was not considered to be a part. The armature, the brushes, the bolts, and other pieces of the motor were all parts. The motor was not. Apparently in 1959, when the motor was designed, a table saw motor was intended to be repaired - rewound, if necessary, but not ever replaced. The motor design was so successful they were still using it throughout the 1960s. So I took the motor apart late one night. Mud dauber wasps had flown into the ventilation slots, and in a matter of a week or so had filled all the empty spaces in the motor with mud, wasp grubs, and paralyzed spiders. I gave the spiders and grubs to little fish in the stream behind the house, and carefully washed out the mud, and reassembled the motor. Clothing is already made repairable- it comes with spare buttons all the time. And unlike many of these other things people are talking about, it doesn't take a workshop or tons of skill to do the repair. Plastic is difficult to repair, since it's brittle and doesn't paint or glue easily, but with epoxy and properly clamped you can at least make an item usable again until you can find a suitable replacement. Following the Repair Manifesto, I wanted to share a little success story repairing something. Our hand mixer stopped working. It was a hand-me-down from my side of the family, and Cimmorene loved it because she had another set of beaters (I think it they were for a cheap hand mixer that fell apart) that she liked and that fit. Well I mentioned it to my mother, since I thought I was going to have to throw it out, and she mentioned that my paternal grandfather had taken apart her Sunbeam Mixmaster when it stopped working, blew out the dust, put it back together, and it worked again. So I thought, "I bet I could do the same thing with this hand mixer" and today I did just that. It's an old General Electric in an awful shade of green that apparently was popular after WWII, but when I took it apart, I could see that it was good, solid construction. I figured the gears turning the beaters were the problem, and so I sprayed it with a little lubricant. I finally decided to take the gear assembly apart, and as I popped out the gears, I could see there was peanut butter in them, mostly underneath the gear shaft. Sugru is a durable, mouldable silicone rubber that can be used for repairing different kinds of objects but for surfaces as well. We had a conversation with the inventor of Sugru, Jane ni Dhulchaoingtigh about the story and future of Sugru.

"Originally I worked as a sculptor in Ireland but moved to London to study product design at the RCA London in 2002. When I was there I quickly realised that I did not want to design new things - I love old things, things with stories and scars and a history. At the same time I was exploring materials to find new visual languages. These two ideas came together in the idea for Sugru: a new tool that people use freely to repair, adapt, hack and customise. The colours and tactile quality of the material mean that they are proud of their repairs - they celebrate them rather than hide them. My dream is for this to grow into a mainstream attitude that can offer a practical alternative to the throwaway mindset. Since the beginning, five years ago, I have built a business by collaborating with a number of scientists and business partners. We have developed and patented a new class of silicone materials, which you can mould by hand, stick to things and which cure at room temperature. As for this Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can mend the holes in your sweater in a beautiful way with the wool filler of Heleen Klopper and darn socks with the help of Nienke Sybrandy and Eva Heisterkamp's instructions. Give your ceramic or plastic doll new limbs as inspired by the work of Jan Vormann, or try out one of the improvisation repair kits by buro buurvrouw. Just using duct tape for your repair is also possible; we have a rainbow of colours in stock. In the DREMEL repair station you will find the right tools for a lot of different repairs. Dremel is a multifunctional tool that makes repairing child's play: grinding, drilling, polishing and sanding are done in a trice. The Adobe clay wallpaper station in the middle of the space is a new addition. The station consists of two walls made of loam. Because the loam keeps cracking, the walls are in constant need of repair. We invite you to repair one of the cracks during your visit and document the ingredients you use well. We are curious to see if new and beautiful techniques will result from this experiment. Platform21 now offers a solution for broken china: the new repair technique Bison kintsugi. Designer Lotte Dekker developed a new view of gluing porcelain based on kintsugi, an old Japanese technique in which porcelain is repaired with gold leaf. Naast veel inspiratie en informatie biedt Platform21 = Repairing ook verschillende reparatie units waar je zelf aan de slag kunt.

Deze vrijdag, zaterdag en zondag kun je op prachtige wijze gaten in je wollen trui dichten met de wolplamuur van Heleen Klopper, of sokken stoppen aan de hand van de instructies van Nienke Sybrandy en Eva Heisterkamp. In het DREMEL station kun je terecht voor reparaties voor van alles en nog wat. Een Dremel is een multifunctioneel gereedschap dat repareren een fluitje van een cent maakt: slijpen, boren, polijsten en schuren doe je in een handomdraai. Er is een heel assortiment aanwezig, dus experimenteer naar hartenlust met dit apparaatje. Ook biedt dit station uitkomst voor kapotte poppen, robots en kleine beeldjes die je herstelt door ze nieuwe ledematen te geven. Deze zitten in de 'body part bags' geïnspireerd op het werk van beeldend kunstenaar Jan Vormann. Met een collectie gereedschap waaronder naast de Dremels, klei, LEGO, bladgoud, zeeschelpen en allerlei spatels en raspen kun je direct aan de slag. Toch de juiste techniek niet gevonden? Dan biedt een van de improvisatie repair kits van buro buurvrouw wellicht een oplossing. Gewoon duct tape gebruiken voor je reparatie kan uiteraard ook; we hebben een regenboog aan kleuren op voorraad. Verder leer je handige trucs uit de skatescene om schoenen te repareren en is er een station waar we experimenteren met reparaties aan ruiten. Nieuw is het Adobe kleibehang station in het midden van de ruimte. Hier staan twee muurtjes van leem. Doordat er barsten ontstaan in de klei, moeten de muren telkens gerepareerd worden. En daar houden wij van. We nodigen je uit tijdens je bezoek een barst te repareren en goed bij te houden welke ingrediënten je hiervoor gebruikt. We zijn vooral benieuwd of er nieuwe mooie technieken ontstaan. Platform21 biedt nu ook een oplossing voor gebroken servies met nieuwe reparatietechniek Bison Kintsugi. Ontwerper Lotte Dekker ontwikkelde een andere kijk op het lijmen van porselein gebaseerd op Kintsugi, een oude Japanse techniek waarbij porselein wordt gerepareerd met bladgoud. In the spring, Platform21 adopted this sweet little microcar. Completely rusty, the car was stalled-out on our driveway and wouldn't drive again. Who would take pity on this little one? Car mechanic Jesper van Koningsbruggen was up for it and together we decided to make it into a challenge: to turn this rustbucket into a rough-riding RAT-STYLE ROD! Rat style is a car-customising subculture that uses original parts only and strictly forbids showy touches. It’s all about function over fashion, and it’s perfect for Platform21=Repairing. Platform21 adopteerde in het voorjaar een kleine, schattige brommobiel. Totaal verroest stond het kneusje stil op de oprit, want rijden deed hij ook niet meer. Wie wilde zich over het autootje ontfermen? Automonteur Jesper van Koningsbruggen wist er wel raad mee en samen besloten we er een uitdaging van te maken: om het microwagentje in twee dagen om te toveren van roestbak tot ruige, rijdende RATSTYLE ROD! Ratstyle is een subcultuur in de auto-opknap-wereld waarbij alleen oorspronkelijke onderdelen worden gebruikt en protserige tierelantijnen niet zijn toegestaan. Function over Fashion dus, en geknipt voor Platform21=Repairing. Samen met publiek gingen we aan de slag met slijptollen, Dremels, plamuur en spuitbussen. For artist Jan Vormann, holes in old walls aren’t eyesores but opportunities to add colour to the city. Why should you have to repair a building using the material it was made out of?

Vormann found Lego to be the perfect solution for fixing cracks, holes and crumbling corners. He fills them with the plastic bricks, calling the practice Dispatchwork. Vormann had already left a colourful trail of repairs in Berlin; Bocchignano, Italy; and Tel Aviv, when Platform21 decided to invite him to patch up some Amsterdam walls during a Dispatchwork workshop in collaboration with Amsterdam's Centre for Architecture <a href="http://www.arcam.nl">Arcam</a>. On Firday 19 June 2009 we headed into town with an enthusiastic group of participants and a load of LEGO. And while Amsterdam walls are remarkably hole-free, we did find that doorposts and walls in the Peperstraat, a playground in the Binnen Bantammerstraat and de Waag on the Nieuwmarkt were in need of some playful repair. It brought back memories from childhood: digging through your LEGO looking for the right stone to fit the hole perfectly, and the street turning into a playground again. Gaten in oude muren zijn voor kunstenaar Jan Vormann geen doorn in het oog, maar juist een kans de stad meer kleur te geven. En waarom zou je een gebouw alleen kunnen repareren met het materiaal waarvan het gemaakt is?

Vormann vond in Lego de perfecte oplossing voor scheuren, gaten en afgebrokkelde hoeken. Hij vult ze op met de plastic steentjes, wat hij Dispatchwork noemt. Jan Vormann liet al een kleurrijk spoor van reparaties achter in Berlijn, Bocchignano in Italië en Tel Aviv. Platform21 nodigde hem uit om Amsterdamse muren een Dispatch opknapbeurt te geven tijdens een workshop in samenwerking met <a href="http://www.arcam.nl">Arcam</a>. Op vrijdag 19 juni 2009 trokken we met een enthousiaste groep deelnemers en een hele hoop LEGO de stad in. En hoewel muren in Amsterdam in verbazingwekkend goede staat verkeren, vonden we dat de deurposten en muren in de Peperstraat, een speeltuin in de Binnen Bantammerstraat en de Waag op de Nieuwmarkt wel wat kleurrijke reparatie konden gebruiken. Het voelde een beetje als vroeger: door de LEGO graven op zoek naar dat ene steentje om precies de goede vorm mee te maken en de straat werd weer een speelplaats. Ons LEGO-plezier bleef niet onopgemerkt en al snel sloten voorbijgangers zich aan bij onze reparatie-missie. Hieronder zie je de resultaten.
