Designer Lotte Dekker developed a new view of gluing porcelain based on kintsugi, an old Japanese technique in which porcelain is repaired with gold leaf. Wool filler for mending holes in textiles was born out of a need of designer Heleen Klopper to repair a hole in a wool cardigan. The edges of such holes are rarely clean-cut; they are usually surrounded by ladders, fraying or worn patches. The differences in thickness of fabric and openness of weave make felt the ideal solution. Felt, being non-woven, attaches easily to any open structure. Fillers made for materials like wood consist of fibres and a chemical binder. Felt is different: it attaches mechanically by means of minuscule scales. Where once there was a hole, there’s now a new piece of fabric. This technique proved not only to be an upgrade to clothing, but also to rugs and other home textiles.

Wolplamuur als vulmiddel voor textiel is ontstaan uit de behoefte van ontwerper Heleen Klopper om een gat in een wollen vest te repareren. Zo’n soort gat is zelden scherp begrenst; meestal zitten er ladders, rafels of slijtageplekken omheen. Dit verschil in dikte en openheid van het textiel vormt een ideale bodem voor vilt, dat zich als non-woven gemakkelijk hecht aan elke open structuur. Bestaat een vulmiddel als bijvoorbeeld houtplamuur uit vezels en een chemisch bindmiddel; het bijzondere aan vilt is dat het zich door minuscule schubben mechanisch hecht. Op de plaats van het gat ontstaat iets nieuws, een nieuw stukje stof. Deze techniek heeft bewezen niet alleen wollen truien een upgrade te geven, maar ook mooi toe te passen is op vloerkleden en ander textiel in huis.

The Repair Manifesto is part of the project <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/page/4315/nl?lang=en">Platform21 = Repairing</a> for which we sought to make repairing cool again – over a period of five months. Both with the help of designers and visitors, new repair techniques were developed and many ingenious repairs were carried out in Platform21. Although the project has now ended in Platform21, it doesn't mean we are dropping the repair mentality. Platform21 = Repairing will soon travel to New York, and we hope the manifesto will keep inspiring people to STOP RECYCLING and START REPAIRING! During our repair research on the web, we came across the beautiful work of photographer Lindsay Blatt. Blatt set out to make a photo essay on Brooklyn’s shoe repairmen. Curious to know where the attention and admiration that speak from her portraits and still lives originate from, we e-mailed her with some questions.

What inspired you to photograph shoe repairmen? During the fist year that I lived in New York, I was destroying my shoes at an alarming rate. I don't think I ever noticed a shoe repair shop in my hometown of Phoenix Arizona, but they seemed to be everywhere in NYC, so I decided to take in some shoes. The guy did a wonderful job, and I learned that shoes could be mended over and over again - instead of tossing them out. I've lived in NYC for eight years, and in the beginning I was testing out a lot of Brooklyn neighborhoods. Each time I moved, it became a priority to find my local repairman. I became friendly with them, and learned that they immigrated from many different countries (not just Italy and Russia). Israel, Jamaica, Korea, Ecuador, Dominican Republic... They were all above a certain age; I met only one that was under 55. It seemed like there were no young apprentices, and I began to ask them if this was the case. Most of them told me that this job would be around until the end of time, and were always eager to remind me it was one of the first professions. But none of them said that their sons or daughters would be taking over the shop, or that they knew were I could go if I wanted to learn the craft. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4709"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/303/4709-360-360.jpg" height="360" width="360" alt="Repair &amp; Shine" title="Repair &amp; Shine" /></a><a title="Click to get a larger image - Repair & Shine - Platform 21" href="/page/4709/en">Repair & Shine</a> Each shop is a separate world, and many have been in the same storefront for over 30 years. Each tool, machine, table, everything is in just the right spot for that repairman. I was obsessed with the microcosms they had built, and haven't seen anything else like it. How did you find the repairmen you portrayed? By living in different neighborhoods, and scouting locations on my bike. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4711"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/649/4711-360-360.jpg" height="360" width="360" alt="Repair &amp; Shine" title="Repair &amp; Shine" /></a><a title="Click to get a larger image - Repair & Shine - Platform 21" href="/page/4711/en">Repair & Shine</a> How did they respond to your request to photograph them? It was extremely difficult to get into these shops. One of the initial hindrances was the language barrier. Trying to explain what I wanted to accomplish was the hardest part. A lot of them turned me down, even after I had other portraits as examples. Maybe they are modest? From the start of the project I knew that I wanted to use a large format (4x5) camera. I thought that the process of bringing a huge camera and taking my time setting up each shot would show the repairmen how committed I was to making the portraits special. I got the impression that they could identify with this cumbersome and anachronistic piece of equipment. These stores are incredibly small, and they are packed with machines, tools, and shoes waiting to be repaired. Most locations only offered one or two options for camera set-ups. The second problem that I ran into was the time limits I was given. Almost all of the men said I could come in for 10-15 minutes, any more and they wouldn't be able to finish their work. Everyone was worried I would be in his customers' way (and I most definitely was). As I tried to explain that the camera takes a long time to set up, and that I was coming from very far away, it usually didn't help to prolong the window of opportunity. But once I got there, and they saw this giant camera come out, and that I had to get under a dark cloth to focus, they became really interested. The repairmen would come over and ask me to show them how it worked, and they were ecstatic while looking at the Polaroids. Soon enough they were suggesting compositions for the photos, and telling me about how they got into the profession and asking if I was married. They all seemed to have a son that I needed to meet. One even told me that he went to college in Russia for photography, and his first job out of school was taking yearbook photos. By the end of the shoots, I had usually been there about three hours, shared lunch and tea, and knew all about their families. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4708"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/548/4708-360-360.jpg" height="360" width="360" alt="Repair &amp; Shine" title="Repair &amp; Shine" /></a><a title="Click to get a larger image - Repair & Shine - Platform 21" href="/page/4708/en">Repair & Shine</a> The most satisfying part was last November, when one of the repairmen came to the opening of Repair & Shine. I have a photo of us in front of his portrait, and his son helped to interpret his father's gratitude. After the show I had prints made of each of the guys, and delivered them on my bike. Each of them was appreciative of the work I had done, and invited me to come back anytime. Why did you choose for Brooklyn? Is there a certain history of repairs in Brooklyn? I received a grant in 2008 from the Brooklyn Arts Council, which helped to fund the work. It is a Brooklyn-centric organization, each recipient needs to be a resident of the borough, and the subject be focused on Brooklyn. Tijdens ons online onderzoek naar reparatie kwamen we het prachtige werk van fotograaf Lindsay Blatt tegen. Blatt maakte een foto-essay over schoenreparateurs in Brooklyn. Nieuwsgierig naar de oorsprong van de aandacht en bewondering die uit de portretten spreken, stuurden we haar een e-mail met wat vragen.

Wat inspireerde je om schoenreparateurs te fotograferen? In het eerste jaar dat ik in New York woonde, versleet ik mijn schoenen in alarmerend hoog tempo. Terwijl me in mijn geboortestad Phoenix in Arizona nog nooit een schoenenreparatie shop was opgevallen, leek het of er in NYC op elke hoek van de straat één zat. Daarom besloot ik een paar schoenen te laten repareren. De reparateur leverde geweldig werk af, en ik leerde dat je schoenen keer op keer kunt laten herstellen, in plaats van ze weg te gooien. Ik woon nu acht jaar in New York waarvan ik in het begin in veel verschillende wijken binnen Brooklyn heb gewoond. Elke keer als ik verhuist was, werd het een van mijn eerste prioriteiten om mijn lokale schoenreparateur te vinden. Ik raakte bevriend met mijn schoenreparateurs en ontdekte dat ze vanuit veel verschillende landen naar New York waren geïmmigreerd (en niet allemaal Italiaans of Russisch waren, zoals ik eerst dacht): Israël, Jamaica, Korea, Ecuador, de Dominicaanse Republiek... Ze waren allemaal van boven een bepaalde leeftijd; ik heb er maar één ontmoet die jonger was dan 55. Het leek alsof er geen jonge leerlingen waren, en ik begon te vragen of dit het geval was. De meeste reparateurs vertelden me dan dat deze baan tot het einde der dagen zou blijven bestaan en wezen me er altijd op dat dit een van de oudste beroepen is. Maar geen van hen vertelde me dat een zoon of dochter de zaak over zou nemen, en niet een wist waar ik heen zou moeten als ik het vak wilde leren. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4709"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/303/4709-360-360.jpg" height="360" width="360" alt="Repair &amp; Shine" title="Repair &amp; Shine" /></a><a title="Click to get a larger image - Repair & Shine - Platform 21" href="/page/4709/en">Repair & Shine</a> Elke winkel is een aparte wereld, en veel van de schoenreparateurs spenderen al meer dan 30 jaar binnen dezelfde zaak. Elk gereedschap, elke machine en tafel; alles staat precies op de goede plek voor deze reparateur. Ik werd enorm geboeid door de microkosmossen die ze allen hadden gebouwd. Ik had zoiets nog nooit eerder gezien. Hoe vond je de reparateurs die je portretteerde? Door in verschillende wijken te wonen en al fietsend op zoek te gaan naar shops. Hoe reageerden ze op je verzoek om hen te fotograferen? Het was zeker niet gemakkelijk om hun toestemming te krijgen. Een van de eerste belemmeringen was de taalbarrière. Uitleggen wat ik wilde bereiken was het moeilijkste gedeelte. Veel van de reparateurs wezen me af, zelfs toen ik eenmaal andere portretten had om als voorbeeld te laten zien. Misschien zijn ze te bescheiden. Voordat ik aan het project begon, besloot ik dat ik een groot formaat camera (4x5) wilde gebruiken. Het proces van het meenemen van een enorme camera en de tijd die nodig is om het ding op te stellen, zou de reparateurs laten zien hoe toegewijd ik was hun portret speciaal te maken. Ik kreeg de indruk dat de reparateurs zich aangetrokken voelden tot het logge en ouderwetse apparaat. De shops waren ontzettend klein en stonden daarbij vol met machines, gereedschappen, en schoenen die wachtten op reparatie. Bij de meeste locaties waren er maar een of twee verschillende opties om de camera neer te zetten. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4711"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/649/4711-360-360.jpg" height="360" width="360" alt="Repair &amp; Shine" title="Repair &amp; Shine" /></a><a title="Click to get a larger image - Repair & Shine - Platform 21" href="/page/4711/en">Repair & Shine</a> Het tweede probleem waar ik telkens tegenop liep, was de tijdslimiet die ik kreeg. Bijna alle mannen zeiden dat ik 10 of 15 minuutjes binnen kon komen; langer en ze zouden hun werk niet op tijd afkrijgen. Iedereen was bezorgd dat ik de klanten in de weg zou lopen (en dat deed ik ook zeker). Als ik probeerde uit te leggen dat het lang duurt om de camera op te stellen, en dat ik van heel ver kwam, hielp dat meestal niet om mijn tijdsraam te vergroten. Maar als ik er eenmaal was, en ze zagen de gigantische camera tevoorschijn komen, en dat ik onder een zwart doek moest staan om scherp te stellen, raakten ze erg geïnteresseerd. Dan kwamen ze naar me toe om te vragen hoe de camera werkt en waren ze verrukt wanneer ze de Polaroids zagen. Voor ik het wist deden ze dan suggesties voor composities, vertelden ze me hoe ze in het vak waren gerold en vroegen ze of ik getrouwd was. Ze leken allemaal een zoon te hebben die ik moest ontmoeten. Een man vertelde me zelfs dat hij in Rusland naar de academie was geweest om te leren fotograferen, en dat zijn eerste baan na school het maken van foto’s voor het jaarboek was. Als de shoot dan klaar was, was ik er meestal zo’n drie uur geweest, had ik met hun geluncht en thee gedronken, en wist ik alles over hun families. Wat me de meeste voldoening gaf, was toen een van de schoenreparateurs naar de opening kwam van Repair &Shine. Ik heb een foto van ons voor zijn portret en zijn zoon hielp om zijn vaders dank te vertalen. Na de show heb ik prints laten maken van elke foto, en heb ik ze met de fiets langs gebracht bij alle schoenreparateurs. It seems impossible, but American artist Nina Katchadourian decided to offer the spiders in a Finnish forest some help by mending their broken webs. The contents of her repair kit: red yarn, scissors, tweezers and glue.

She repaired the webs by inserting short bits of red yarn directly into the web. Sometimes she starched the threads, which made them easier to work with. The short threads were held in place by the stickiness of the spider web itself; longer threads were reinforced by dipping the tips into white glue. She continued until the whole web was repaired or up to the point where it could not longer hold the weight of the threads. At first she assumed the wind had blown them out; on closer inspection it became clear that the spider had repaired the web to perfect condition using its own methods, throwing the threads out in the process. The repairs were always rejected by the spider and discarded, usually during the course of the night, even in webs that looked abandoned. The rejected patches retained their form, although in a somewhat "wilted" condition without the rest of the web to suspend and stretch them. She framed the patches and exhibited them. She even did some advertising for her new, somewhat improbable, but poetic repair service. The original repair kit is now on show at Platform21. Het lijkt onmogelijk, maar de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Nina Katchadourian besloot de spinnen in een Fins bos een handje te helpen door hun kapotte webben te herstellen. In haar repairkit: rood garen, een schaartje, een pincet en lijm.

Ze stopte de gaten met korte stukjes rood garen die ze met een pincet direct in het web plakte. Soms stijfde ze de draadjes op, waardoor het een stuk makkelijker werd ermee te werken. Korte draden werden op hun plek gehouden door de kleverigheid van het web zelf; langere draden werden versterkt door de uiteinden in de witte lijm te dopen. Net zolang totdat het web geheel gerepareerd was, of het gewicht van de draden niet meer kon dragen. Maar vaak gingen reparaties gepaard met nog meer schade. Eerst dacht ze dat de wind de draadconstructie uit het web had geblazen, maar bij nader inzicht bleek dat de spin zijn eigen web tot in perfectie had hersteld op zijn éigen manier, en daarbij de vreemde draden uit zijn web had gegooid. Het rode draad werd altijd verworpen, meestal gedurende de nacht, zelfs in de webben die er verlaten en onbewoond uitzagen. De verstootte patches behielden hun vorm, alhoewel wat in de klit en verfrommeld. Katchadourian lijstte ze in en presenteerde ze naast de foto’s van de webben in een galerie. Ze maakte zelfs wat reclame voor haar nieuwe, wat onwaarschijnlijke, maar poëtische repair service.
