<p>It doesn’t matter whether your first meal of the day consists of toast with jam, sausage and beans or fried rice wrapped in banana leaf: the breakfast machine is gaining enthusiastic fans worldwide. All of whom dream of a device that prepares a hands free breakfast. How we know? The invention of Yuri Suzuki and Masa Kimura made newspapers from Europe to Asia and aired on prime time BBC. Allemaal dromen ze van een ontbijt waar je nog geen hand voor hoeft om te draaien. Hoe we dat weten? <p>Breakfast customers at Platform21 are happy customers. Never before were we this thankful for a simple piece of toast with some jam, an omelette and black coffee.</p>

<p>In our breakfast restaurant it is not so much about the end result, but all about the process. Why we make it so difficult for ourselves? Why we want everything to work automatically instead of breaking an egg on the side of a pan ourselves? Evidently there is a little inventor inside all of us, who gets really enthusiastic about a breakfast ‘without hands’, where rolling balls and a big ‘motor’ in the middle keep the whole thing going. It is also going back to basics. What if you should have invented the coffee machine yourself, how would you have done it?</p> <p>If it then proves to work, it doesn’t matter that there aren’t any creamy cappuccinos, freshly squeezed orange juice nor the smell of just baked croissants. <p>Ontbijtklanten bij Platform21, zijn dankbare klanten. Nog nooit waren mensen zo blij met een simpele geroosterde boterham met jam, een omelet en zwarte koffie.</p>

<p>In ons ontbijtrestaurant gaat het namelijk niet zozeer om het eindresultaat als wel om het proces. Waarom we het onszelf zo moeilijk maken en alles automatisch willen laten verlopen in plaats zelf een eitje kapot te tikken op de zijkant van de pan? <br/> Blijkbaar schuilt in ieder van ons een kleine uitvinder, die enorm enthousiast kan worden van een ontbijt ‘zonder handen’, waar rollende balletjes en een grote ‘motor’ in het midden het geheel draaiende houden. En het is ook weer even back to basics. Wat als je het koffiezetapparaat zelf had moeten uitvinden, hoe had jij het dan gedaan?</p> <p>Als het dan allemaal blijkt te werken, geeft het niks dat het hier niet gaat om romige cappuccino’s, verse jus d’orange en geurige, net afgebakken croissants. <p>We’re projecting scenes from famous Hollywood films featuring breakfast machines in the round hall. Flubber, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Wallace and Gromit – Yuri Suzuki has taken inspiration from all of them. The machines in the films might creak a bit here and there, but in general, the preparation of breakfast proceeds smoothly. Everything has been thought of, and between the various components frying the eggs, toasting the bread and spreading the jam, there are grasping mechanisms and robot arms to move the plates, the toast and the rest from one part to the next.</p>

<p>Only after a few days do you start to notice that these scenes, which at first struck us as relatively lo-fi, are full of special effects. On closer inspection, what looks like a totally automated robot arm actually turns out to be a piece of metal being moved from left to right behind the scenes. This makes it appear that no humans are involved. </p> <p>But in reality, things are different. And when we make breakfast tomorrow and the next day, there will be no backstage area where we can help things along. Everything is visible; reality affords no space for special effects. So if it proves impossible within eight days of building to design a system for turning an omelette or automatically placing slices of toast in the jam-spreading trays, we’ll have to do it by hand. We find this rather charming: part machine, part human.</p> Dag acht - de allerlaatste bouwdag

<p>In de ronde ruimte projecteren we de scènes uit bekende Hollywood-films waar een ontbijtmachine in voorkomt. Flubber, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Casper het Spookje en Wallis and Gromit, voor Yuri Suzuki is het allemaal inspiratie. De machines in de films kraken wat hier en daar, maar de bereiding van het ontbijt verloopt over het algemeen soepel. Overal is aan gedacht, en tussen de verschillende onderdelen die iets bakken, toasten of besmeren zijn er grijpmechanismen of robotarmen die het bord, de toast of wat er ook maar gemaakt wordt van het een naar het andere onderdeel overbrengen.</p>

<p>Na een paar dagen valt het pas op dat deze scènes, die ons eerst redelijk low-fi overkwamen, vol zitten met special effects. Wat een geheel automatische robotarm leek, is bij nader inzien een stuk ijzer dat achter de schermen van links naar rechts wordt bewogen. Op deze manier komt er binnen het beeld geen mens aan het ontbijt te pas. </p> <p>In het echt is dat wel anders. Bij de bereiding van het ontbijt morgen en overmorgen is er geen backstage waar wat gesjoemeld kan worden. Alles is zichtbaar en de realiteit biedt geen ruimte voor trucage. Dus als het onmogelijk blijkt om binnen de acht bouwdagen een systeem te bedenken dat het omelet omdraait of dat de toast automatisch in de jam-smeerbakjes overhevelt, moet je dat gewoon met de hand doen. <p>Building a breakfast machine consists of lots of small victories and of just as much setbacks. Although today was about finishing touches and perfecting different bits, Yuri's bread toasting machine came crashing down this morning. Let's hope we can get it back to work before Friday.</p>

<p>Some familiar faces stopped by to help today: artist Toyoko Shimada (initiator of previous project Foodology), designer Cynthia Hathaway (curator of previous project Travels Through Paradise, participant in Hacking IKEA and co-writer of the Repair Manifesto), stylist Frank Visser (set designer of Platform21 = Cooking and Constructing) and Heleen Klopper (Platform21 = Repairing). <p>Een ontbijtmachine bouwen bestaat uit een hele hoop overwinningen en evenveel tegenslagen. Ook al draaide vandaag om de finishing touches en het perfectioneren van eerder gemaakte onderdelen, we hadden niet kunnen verwachten dat Yuri's toast machine vandaag aan diggelen zou vallen. Maar dat gebeurde wel. Laten we hopen dat het geheel voor vrijdag weer draait.</p>

<p>Today we developed a new function for the machine. How do you get the perfect amount of jam evenly spread on a slice of bread? After much drawing and pondering over difficult mathematical theories designers Aya Comorri (JP) and Lisette Haasnoot decided it was better to just give it a try. In practice it turned out to be as easy as it seemed difficult. The tools: a rope, a small container for paint, a paper plate and foam rollers. By means of a small motor the plate holding a slice of bread rolled into the paint container. Here it gets smeared with an even amount of jelly by the foam rollers. Afterwards the plate rolls along to other parts of the machine to complete breakfast.</p>

<p>Masa Kimura’s day is taken up by arraging the timing of the machine, in order for the coffee to be poored in the coffee cup and not over the bread, something that did happen in the movie Bach to the Future. At the end of the day Masa does some tests and it all seems to work. The last two days will probably revolve around the finishing touches. <br/> Yuri Suzuki and designer Cluadio Bracco have worked together on the component with the bread toaster. The slide is almost finished.</p> <p>Finally two visitors thought up a smart system for the rails to the bell (which rings when breakfast is being served). <p>Vandaag wordt er hard gewerkt aan een nieuwe functie van de machine. Hoe krijg je de perfecte hoeveelheid jam gelijkmatig op een sneetje brood gesmeerd? Na veel tekeningen en wiskundige theorieën besluiten ontwerpsters Aya Comorri (JP) en Lisette Haasnoot dat het beter is om het maar gewoon uit te proberen. Hoe moeilijk het in theorie leek, zo makkelijk blijkt het in praktijk te zijn. Benodigdheden: touw, een verfbakje, papieren bord en schuimrubberen rollers. Het bord met de snee brood wordt door middel van een motortje in het verfbakje gerold waarna het brood door de schuimrubberen rollen wordt besmeerd met jam. Vervolgens gaat het bord verder naar de andere onderdelen van de machine om het ontbijt compleet te maken.</p>

<p>Masa Kimura is de hele dag bezig geweest met de timing van de hele machine, zodat de koffie in het kopje wordt geschonken en niet over het brood zoals in bijvoorbeeld de film Back to the Future. Aan het einde van de dag doet Masa een aantal testjes en blijkt het geheel redelijk goed op elkaar aan te sluiten. De laatste twee dagen zal het vooral gaan om de finishing touch.</p> <p>Yuri Suzuki werkt met behulp van ontwerper Claudio Bracco aan het onderdeel van de broodrooster. De glijbaan voor de toaster is aan het einde van de dag zo goed als af.</p> <p>Tot slot bedenken twee bezoekers een slim systeem voor de baan naar de bel (die aangeeft dat het ontbijt klaar is). <p>How is it possible that we get so excited with a coffeepot that tilts and fills up a cup with nice hot coffee because you pull some lever at the other side of the room? To be honest a coffeepot is a well thought-out instrument that hardly needs any re-designing, especially not the sort of re-designing that makes the whole thing much more complicated. Yet we do, and as has been expressed before, we love it and so do most visitors.</p>

<p>Perhaps building a breakfast machine, precisely because it defeats all logic, brings us a step closer to a pure design process, where the result is less important then the way we get there. We almost finished that coffee machine today and realized that we haven't thought of creamy warm steamed milk to go with it. Thankfully we still have several days left to deal with this essential ingredient to a good breakfast. <p>Hoe is het mogelijk dat volwassen mensen zo blij worden wanneer we uit een koffiepot een heet kopje koffie inschenken door aan een houten plankje aan de andere kant van de kamer te trekken? Eerlijk gezegd is een koffiepot een perfect uitgekristalliseerd design dat niet opnieuw ontworpen hoeft te worden, zeker niet op de gecompliceerde manier waarop we het nu bij Platform21 doen. En toch doen we het en vinden we het, net als de meeste bezoekers, heel leuk en interessant.</p>

<p>Misschien dat het bouwen van een ontbijtmachine - juist omdat het alle wetten van de logica negeert - ons een stap dichterbij een pure vorm van ontwerpen brengt waarbij het resultaat van ondergeschikt belang is aan de weg ernaar toe. </p> <p>Vandaag hebben we het koffiezetapparaat bijna af gekregen en realiseerden we ons dat we vergeten zijn om een apparaat voor romige warme melk op het repertoire te zetten. Gelukkig hebben we nog een flink aantal dagen om dit essentiële ingrediënt aan het ontbijt toe te voegen. <p>It is interesting to see how breakfast machines are used to identify characters in Hollywood movies. In movies like Flubber, Pee-Wee Herman, and Back to the Future it clearly communicates that we are dealing with a nerdy, strange, inventive genius that is a bit different from the rest of us. It saves the director a lot of time explaining this by other cinematographic means. But it doesn’t for the special effects guys. It is a lot of work to get it right.</p>

<p>Are we nerds? I don’t think so. It is just fun and everybody gets involved in finding solutions. Saturday started slow, but around 3 o’clock the place was buzzing with creative energy. Students from the Design Academy in Eindhoven created a bell sounding system that next Friday and Saturday will alert people on the ground floor that breakfast is being served soon. A young couple (one a philosopher and the other a mathematician) came to help Yuri with grinding coffee and the Platform21 team got busy slicing oranges for the juice machine. <p>Het is interessant te zien hoe ontbijtmachines in Hollywood-films worden gebruikt om een specifiek karakter neer te zetten. Films als Flubber, Pee-Wee Herman en Back to the Future gebruiken de ontbijtmachine-scene om zonder enige twijfel te tonen dat we hier te maken hebben met een wereldvreemde, geniale uitvinder die nogal van ons verschilt. Dit scheelt de regisseur veel tijd bij het verdiepen van het karakter, hoewel de mensen van de special effects er een flinke klus bij hebben. Het is ontzettend veel werk, en iedere oplossing creëert weer een nieuw probleem. <br/> Of dat ons ook nerds maakt? Ik denk het niet. Het is vooral heel leuk om te doen en veel handen maken licht werk. We zijn dan ook blij dat er heel wat animo is om mee te bouwen.</p>

<p>Zaterdag begint langzaam maar rond 15.00 uur zoemt de ruimte van creatieve energie. Een aantal studenten van de Design Academy in Eindhoven hebben een belsysteem ontworpen om mensen op de begane grond te laten weten dat het etenstijd is. Anderen helpen Yuri en Masa met het maken van een machine om koffiebonen te malen. Het Platform21 team maakt een machine om sinaasappels te snijden voor de sapmachine. <p>Today we realise that building a breakfast machine is basically the sum of one thousands little problems that need to be fixed. If you look at them all at once, it seems impossible to solve them. If you study them one at the time, you realise it is not that bad at all. Therefore it is great to see so many makers from all makes of life wanting to help us find solutions.</p>

<p>Today Yuri and Masa, with help from students of the HKU created most of the egg frying machine. It works and the smells are great. The central motor, which has to supply the whole machine with power, is finished and functions (most of the time).</p> <p>In the afternoon both Masa and Yuri give a small overview of some of the other work they do. Masa Kimura creates walking robots using old engineering techiques (Theo Jansen's ^{<a href="http://www.strandbeest.com/">*</a>} prove to be a source of inspiration) and Yuri has a passion for capturing sound in on-orthodox ways. <p>Vandaag realiseren we ons dat een ontbijtmachine eigenlijk de som is van 1000 kleine problemen die moeten worden opgelost. Als je tegelijk naar alle problemen kijkt, is het onmogelijk deze op te lossen. Bekijk je ze één voor één, dan valt het best mee. Zo kunnen ook mensen die niet erg technische begaafd zijn best een paar van die 1000 problemen oplossen.</p>

<p>Vandaag hebben Yuri en Masa, met hulp van studenten van de HKU de eierbakmachine werkend gekregen. Lekker die geur van een gebakken eitje in de ruimte. En de centrale motor, die uiteindelijk alles moet gaan aanzwengelen, staat en doet het (meestal).</p> <p>In de namiddag geven Yuri en Masa allebei een lezing over hun werk. Masa maakt lopende robots met ouderwetse technieken (hij blijkt een grote fan te zijn van de <a href="http://www.strandbeest.com/">Strandbeesten</a> van Theo Jansen) en Yuri heeft een passie voor het vangen van geluiden met onorthodoxe technieken.
